Frank McLaughlin

Franklin Bernard McLaughlin passed away on Tuesday, November 22, 2022, at Southern Ocean Medical Center in Manahawkin, New Jersey.

Frank was born on March 28, 1934, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Frank was an accomplished runner; he was a state champion at Haverford High School and an All American at St. Joseph's University. Frank spent 2 years in the US army and ran for the 7th Army Division. In addition to his love of sports, Frank loved the written word and was a prolific writer and editor. He was the author of The Mediate Teacher, Yukon Journey, and Runner's Song. He was also a co-founding editor at School Paperback Journal and Media & Methods magazine and a textbook editor for Houghton Mifflin. Frank was a contributing editor for several magazines, including Writing!, Children's World Magazine, This Month in New Jersey and New York, and The Yukoner Magazine. During his tenure as a magazine editor, Frank interviewed a number of famous authors and speakers, including Marshall McLuhan, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Jiddu Krishnamurti, Kurt Vonnegut, Robert Frost, Robert Cormier, and R. D. Lawrence. He was also a gifted teacher and touched the lives of many students. Frank was an English professor at Monmouth Regional High School, Monmouth College, Brookdale College, Fairleigh Dickinson University, Ramapo College, Bergen County Community College, and Ocean County Community College. Frank shared his love of running as a track coach at Haverford High School. In addition to coaching track, as a lifelong lover of sports, one of his greatest joys was watching his children and grandchildren compete at sports. He was honored in 2000 as part of the first inductee class of the St. Joseph's University Sports Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Haverford High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2019.

Frank is survived by his wife Ruth, his children Frank, Matthew, and Rachel, and his grandchildren Nicholas, Luke, Taylor, Frank, Deron, Ashley, and Ray. His son Paul preceded him in death.

A service celebrating Frank's life will be held on Saturday, December 10, at 11:00 am at Holy Innocents' Church, 410 South Atlantic Ave, Beach Haven, New Jersey.
