In Loving Memory of Frank Walter Scribbick lll 03/11/1961 - 07/27/2025
Frank It is with profound sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Frank Walter Scribbick III. Frank was called to be with the Lord on July 27, 2025, while he was swimming in the open waters near the Island of San Andres, Colombia, after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest. Frank passed while he was doing one of the activities that he truly loved the most- swimming freely in the ocean.
Frank touched countless lives with his kindness, faith, and joy. He brought comfort and inspiration to his family, colleagues, parish community, patients, and even those he encountered only briefly. His warm smile reflected both his passion for life and his deep love for others. Above all, Frank was a devoted Catholic, son, brother, uncle, husband, and father.
Frank was born on March 11, 1961, in Dayton, Ohio, to Frank Walter Scribbick Jr. and Jean Marie Scribbick. From an early age, he was guided by faith, family, hard work, and service-values that remained the foundation of his life. He grew up in Fairfield, California, and attended Vanden High School, where he developed a lifelong passion for sports-especially wrestling, football, and tennis. He graduated with the Class of 1979.
Frank earned his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Davis, before receiving his Doctor of Medicine from the F. Edward Hebert School of Medicine in Bethesda, Maryland, in 1987. He completed his internship at Tripler Army Hospital in Hawaii in 1988 and went on to serve his country as an Army flight surgeon in Korea from 1988 to 1990. In 1994, he completed his ophthalmology residency at Brooke Army Medical Center in
San Antonio, Texas. He later pursued a fellowship in ocular pathology at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, which he completed in 1997.
Frank served as an ophthalmologist in the U.S. Army at Brooke Army Medical Center for 20 years, retiring in 2007 with the rank of Colonel after serving as Chief of Ophthalmology from 2006 to 2007. In addition, he began working with UT Health in 1997, working with residents in the Lions Eye Pathology Laboratory. Over the years, he advanced through many titles to Clinical Professor, and in 2006 was named Lions Sight Research Foundation Distinguished Professorship in Ophthalmic Pathology/Clinical Professor-a title he held until his retirement in 2022. Frank found his greatest professional fulfillment in mentoring medical residents and providing compassionate care to underserved communities.
Frank found great joy in tending to his home gardens and was an avid reader throughout his life. He cherished traveling with his wife and deeply valued the time he spent with his children. Some of his most treasured memories were of traveling one-on-one with each of his children, sharing meaningful experiences and exploring distant lands and cultures together.
Frank was a man of deep faith and made it a priority to attend daily Mass. Since 2020, he and his wife served together as sacristans, faithfully preparing the liturgical space and ensuring everything was properly in order for mass - a role he embraced with devotion and care. He was also an active member of the Arboreans, volunteering his Saturday mornings to maintain the church, school, and rectory grounds, always taking pride in keeping them beautiful and welcoming. On Tuesday mornings at 6:30 a.m., Frank faithfully attended "That Man is You," a Catholic men's leadership program focused on spiritual growth and becoming the man God calls each to be. Despite the early hour, he eagerly participated and valued camaraderie and fellowship with his fellow parishioners. In addition to his parish activities, he volunteered his professional skills for many years by providing free eye exams to those in need through I Care San Antonio.
Frank was predeceased by his parents and grandparents. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Lillian "Dee Dee" Scribbick; his children, Aidan, Finn, and Sine Scribbick; his ex-wife, Arie Scribbick; his brother, Pat Scribbick; and his sister, Eileen Scribbick.
Services will be held at St. Pius X Catholic Church on August 29, 2025, beginning with a Rosary at 10:00 a.m., followed by Mass at 10:30 a.m. A reception will take place at 11:30 a.m., with a private family committal service to follow at Fort Sam Houston. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to St. Pius X Catholic Church or I Care San Antonio.
