Fred Lewis Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Jenkins-Soffe Funeral Chapel & Cremation Center - South Jordan on Jan. 16, 2026.
Edward Fred Lewis passed away from Parkinson's disease on January 2, 2026, at his home in Bountiful, Utah.

Fred was born on June 16, 1944, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Edward Charles Lewis and Celesta Snell. He was raised in downtown Salt Lake City and graduated from East High School.

Following high school, he joined the Army National Guard and completed his service with the Air National Guard. Fred later attended and graduated from the University of Utah and remained a loyal Utes fan throughout his life.

He began his career with the Utah State Department of Transportation, where he dedicated 40 years of service. Fred eventually retired as the Director of Traffic and Safety. He married Janet La Vaughn Bishop, and together they had three children. The couple later divorced.

From a young age, Fred had a deep love for the outdoors and was always ready for a camping trip. He especially enjoyed fishing and duck hunting and was rarely without a bird dog each one his favorite, though Angel and Sadie held a special place in his heart. Fred served as President of the North Point Duck Club from 1981 to 2012, during which time he played an instrumental role in rebuilding the marshlands in Davis County following the flood of 1983.

In 1998, while still working at the Department of Transportation, Fred met Wilma Peguillan, whom he married in 2002. After retiring from his position as Director of Traffic and Safety, Fred and Wilma spent time cheering on the Utes, attending their grandchildren's events, and enjoying evenings dancing in Wendover.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, George; his sister, Bonnie; and his daughter-in-law, Heidi.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Wilma; his sister, Kay; his children, Craig, Celesta, and David; his grandchildren, Tiana (Joseph), Jacob, Joshua, James, Ashley, Riley, McKayla (Sam), and Jaxton; and his great-grandchildren, Liam and Justin. He is also survived by Wilma's children, Debbie, Collette (Leonard), and Todd (Emily; her grandchildren, Cameron, Jessica, Garrett (Alexandria), Zachary, Kyli (Alec), Anthony, Andrew, Joshua (Caroline), and Jordan; and six great-grandchildren, Genesis, Tiger, Noah, J, Crew, and Jason.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 24, 2026 at 11:00 am at Jenkins-Soffe South Valley, 1007 W. South Jordan Parkway, South Jordan, Utah, with a viewing from 9:30 to 10:30 am prior to the service. Interment at Bountiful City Cemetery.

Today, I was looking at the obituary of a `54 East High graduate friend and came across Fred´s as well. I was especially surprised and saddened because I recently tried to locate Fred. I had spent 40 years in Ohio and had lost track of him. I graduated from East in `59, and between about `58 and early `62, had countless adventures with Fred, rabbit hunting west to the airport, fishing, duck hunting at each other´s clubs, shooting, countless burgers at Dee´s and the new Hires Big H, and riding his Tiger Cub and Yamaha. I love Fred Lewis. God bless all who love him and will miss him.
