On August 1, 1953 in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey he married Dorathea Haake. Their loving marriage lasted 68 years without fail until she preceded him in death on March 6, 2021.
Fred's legacy is carried forward by his children, Doranne Dykeman of Edwardsburg, MI, Robin Thayer of Buchanan, MI, Wendy Mitchell of Buchanan, MI, Helen Kenaga (Mike) of Elkhart, IN, Christopher Mitchell (Beth) of Mishawaka, IN, James Mitchell of Elkhart, IN, John Mitchell (Michelle) of Mishawaka, IN, and Walter Mitchell of Niles, MI, his 24 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Fred was a proud veteran of the United States Navy. His time in the service instilled a sense of discipline and camaraderie that he carried into his civilian life. After his honorable discharge, he continued to support his community through his work as a technician with AT&T and as a member of the Trinity Evangelical Free Church, where his faith and fellowship brought him and others great solace and joy.
Fred had a passion for life's simple pleasures. With hands skillful at solving problems, he could often be found tinkering with electrical gadgets, fixing them with a patience and precision that only he possessed. Cooking out and enjoying a drink were cherished moments, reflecting his love for communal gatherings. And as an avid fan of the Indy 500, he made sure never to miss a single lap, his heart racing with each turn around the track.
In keeping with Fred's wishes, cremation will take place. A graveside service with military funeral honors will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, October 20, 2025 at Adamsville Cemetery in Edwardsburg, MI. Palmer Funeral Home ~ Hickey Chapel is assisting the family with arrangements.
