Fred Pope Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Omps Funeral Home and Cremation Center - Amherst Chapel on Feb. 11, 2026.
Fred Walter Pope, Jr., 76, of Stephens City, Virginia, was born on June 28, 1949, in Front Royal, Virginia, passed away on February 8, 2026, at Winchester Medical Center. He was born to Fred Walter Pope and Margaret Mary Sheffield. Fred and his wife, Jeanette Marie Pope, were devoted in their steadfast marriage for 52 years. In addition to his loving wife, Fred is survived by his three sons and one daughter, Jeremy Pope (Jennifer), Jeffrey Pope (Stacey), Jason Pope (Jennifer), and Jennifer Burroughs (Robert). The light of Fred's life were his nine grandchildren, Emily and Megan Pope, Vivian and Jocelyn Pope, Jackson, Madeline and Charlotte Pope, and Elizabeth Burroughs. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Pope, and sister, Ann Pietrowicz. In addition to his parents, Fred's brothers, Larry Pope, and Louis "Eddie" Pope, preceded him in death.

Fred proudly served his country from 1967 to 1971 as a Sergeant in the United States Air Force. He served in South-East Asia during the Vietnam War. During his service, he earned the Air Force Commendation Medal, Air Force Meritorious Award, Good Conduct Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post 2123, Chapter 9, VFW Honor Guard, DAV, and AMVETS.

Fred loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He enjoyed officiating travel baseball and softball. Throughout his life, he was devoted to youth sports by coaching youth baseball, soccer, and basketball. He was instrumental in establishing and officiating programs in Fauquier County, Virginia. He showed his respect for his fellow veterans by serving on the VFW Honor Guard.

Fred followed his Christian faith in his love and service to any and all in need. He showed his complete devotion to others during times of adversity, always willing to offer a helping hand and advise. His family and friends will miss this the most as we honor him through our lives.

Fred asked in lieu of flowers that donations be made to the VFW Post 2123 Honor Guard: Toys for Tots or to your local Fire & Rescue Department.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, at 11am with a service to follow at 12pm at Omps Funeral Home, Amherst Chapel. Officiating will be Pastor Butch Hammond with The Church at Skyline in Front Royal. Interment will be in Culpeper National Cemetery on Friday, February 20, 2026 at 1pm.
