Obituary published on Legacy.com by Campbell Funeral Home - Beverly on Nov. 5, 2025.
Frederick Edmond Hutchinson, known fondly as Fred, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 31, 2025, at the age of 96, at
Kaplan Family Hospice House. He was surrounded by the love and comfort of his family during his final moments.
Born and raised in Beverly, Fred was the son of the late Everard M. and Elizabeth M. (Patch) Hutchinson. He grew up alongside his brothers, the late William "Bill" Hutchinson and Francis "Bud" Hutchinson, and his sister, Shirley Hutchinson. Fred was the devoted husband of the late Joan M. (D'Amour) Hutchinson, with whom he shared 61 wonderful years of love, laughter, and partnership.
A proud graduate of Beverly High School, Class of 1947, Fred played left wing on the hockey team and ran track. Soon after graduation, he served his country honorably as a military police officer during the Korean War from 1952 to 1954. Upon returning home, he attended Northeastern University, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering and Management, a reflection of his sharp mind and steady determination.
On June 30, 1956, Fred married the love of his life, Joan. Together they built a warm and welcoming home in Beverly, where they raised five children: four daughters and one son. Family was everything to Fred and Joan. Their home was always full of laughter, the smell of a good meal, and the joy of being together.
Fred enjoyed a long and rewarding career as an engineer at GTE Sylvania in Danvers, where he worked for more than 35 years before retiring in 1988. He was known for his calm demeanor, strong work ethic, and his trademark dry sense of humor that could lighten any room. His colleagues and friends held him in the highest regard.
Outside of work, Fred found joy in simple pleasures and favorite pastimes. He loved golfing for the Sylvania club team and took pride in the many trophies he earned over the years. He and his brother Bud were regulars at Beverly High football and hockey games, cheering loudly from the stands. Fred was also passionate about photography and loved capturing moments at family gatherings. In the warmer months, he could be found tending to his garden, taking special pride in his bountiful tomato plants. And whenever the ice was right, he never passed up a game of pickup hockey at Kelleher's Pond.
Fred is survived by his children: Janice Wilkins and her husband, Stephen, of Salem, NH; Sheryl Hutchinson and her husband, Ray Lundy, of Flanders, NJ; Frederick Hutchinson and his wife, Lori, of Salem, NH; and Karen Hutchinson of Andover, MA. He will be lovingly remembered by his grandchildren: Kendra, Courtney, Kyle, Alanna, Julia, Kira, Lea, Tyler, Danielle, Patrick, and Collin, and several great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Ellen Hutchinson.
The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to the wonderful staff at The Atrium, where Fred lived for the past two and a half years, for their kindness, patience, and care. They also wish to thank the compassionate team at
Care Dimensions for their exceptional support in Fred's final months.
