Frederick Joseph Mittermeier Jr. peacefully passed away on July 24, 2024, with his loving wife by his side. He was 81 years old and is survived by his wife, Dolores Mittermeier, two identical twin sons, Douglas and Eric Mittermeier, and two grandsons, Kai and Declan Mittermeier. Fred served as the civil engineer for the Town of Haverstraw from 1976 to 2004 and completed countless community enhancements and construction projects, including the Haverstraw Police Station and Philip J. Rotella Golf Course. Fred had a deep passion for engineering, aviation, boating, helping others and for his family and friends.
In his early years growing up in the Bronx, NY, young Fred was amazed by aircraft and longed to be flying in the sky. He quickly became an FAA certified Private Pilot and shortly after earned his Commercial multi-engine rating, allowing him to fly complex aircraft in all different types of weather. He then became an instructor at the Civil Air Patrol, teaching young students the fundamentals of aviation.
Fred then decided to pursue his other passion of engineering, and was accepted into Manhattan College for Civil Engineering, located in New York City. There, he excelled academically and paid for his classes by tutoring others and working as a night watchman. After graduation, Fred worked in New Jersey for Ward Company as a construction engineer where he met his beautiful wife, Dolores.
His passion for engineering then brought him to Pomona, NY when in 1976, he designed and built his home and began work as the civil engineer for the Town of Haverstraw, working under Philip J. Rotella. He spent many years working extremely hard for the town and once retired, contributed countless hours to helping others, building computers, experimenting as a chef and watching his wonderful family grow. Fred also loved boating with his family and friends on Greenwood Lake and on the Hudson River. His wife, Dolores, would make the sandwiches and his sons would help dock the boat. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him, and his lasting impact will be forever cherished.
