G. WILLIAM DALY age 89, beloved husband of the late Margaret (nee Jicha); loving father of Linda Cardellini (husband Anthony, deceased) and G. William, Jr (Deborah Bonser); devoted grandfather of Christina Cardellini-Rockey (husband Andrew), Sarah Daly, Jennifer Creviston (husband Nathan), Steven Daly (fiancé Emma Goddard), Audrey Daly and great grandfather of Josephine Rockey; cherished son of the late George and Beatrice (nee Perry); dearest brother of the late Janice Bean (husband Arthur, deceased) and Susan Hummel (husband Ronald, deceased); dear uncle, great-uncle and friend of many. U.S. Air Force Veteran.
William "Bill" was born in Johnson City, New York, on May 29, 1933, and passed away on October 16, 2022. Growing up, Bill was active in his community and in sports. He graduated from Union-Endicott High School in 1951. Bill graduated from Cornell University with honors in 1955, where he met the love of his life, Margaret "Marge" at the School of Hotel Administration. While at Cornell, he participated and led a variety of activities, including serving as Treasurer of his Fraternity, Phi Sigma Kappa. He was elected Class Marshall in 1955. Bill was a proud member of the ROTC for all four years of school, participating in summer training in addition to weekly training during the school year. His senior year he commanded 1200 Air Force Cadets as the Cadet Colonel, also receiving the Distinguished Air Force medal.
Bill and Marge married in June 1955 after graduation. They moved to Ellington Airforce Base outside of Houston, Texas, after Bill accepted his commission to the Air Force. Bill attended Navigation training school the first summer of his commission and finished 2 out of his class of 80. He served as navigator aboard C-124 aircraft at Travis Air Force Base in California, and routinely flew to Japan and other Pacific locations (nearly 3,000 flying hours during his service). During his tenure, he and Marge welcomed a daughter, Linda. Before his honorable discharge in 1960, he was promoted to 1 Lieutenant and advanced to Instructor Navigator.
After the Air Force, Bill returned to New York and worked at Clark-Cleveland, ultimately becoming Treasurer. During his time at Clark-Cleveland, the Daly family welcomed a son, George William Daly, Jr. After Clark Cleveland, Bill worked for many years in banking as a commercial loan officer first at Marine Midland Southern and then Endicott Trust. He was promoted throughout his career, ultimately becoming Vice President. Over the years, the Daly family began to split time between Vestal, New York, and Turtle Creek, Florida. Most recently, Bill lived in Chagrin Falls, Ohio.
Bill loved golfing and bowling with friends and playing bridge with "The Bridge Club" in New York. An avid golf enthusiast throughout his life, Bill continued to play with his friends throughout his retirement and loved to compete in club tournaments. Bill was a "take charge" man who enjoyed organizing outings to concerts, plays, and sporting events; he was a true NY Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers fan. Bill was a member of the Binghamton City Club, Binghamton Country Club, Tequesta Country Club, and Turtle Creek Country Club for many years, serving as President of both the Binghamton Country Club and the Turtle Creek Club.
He had a strong faith and was an Elder of Union Presbyterian Church in New York and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
Bill was passionate about travelling. One of his life-long dreams was to travel the world, and in 2001 he and Marge went on a six-month cruise around the world. He relished time with his entire family and brought his children and grandchildren together whenever possible. Family reunions at Sky Top Resort, trips to Walt Disney World, and two trips to Hawaii were highlights of his retirement and his grandchildren's childhoods. He doted on his 5 grandchildren and their significant others. Most recently, he was very proud to become Great-Grandfather to Josephine and lit up every time he was able to hold her. Bill's greatest joy was "family togetherness". He cherished being with his family and loved to celebrate holidays, weddings, graduations, anniversaries, and birthdays as a family. He will forever be missed.
