It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of G. Philip Rightmire, who died peacefully on April 11, 2025, at the age of 82. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Philip was a pillar of his community (Town of Scituate may disagree) and an inspiration to those fortunate enough to know him.
Born on September 15, 1942, in Boston, MA, Philip lived a life full of intellectual curiosity, compassion, and generosity. A lifelong learner, he earned his AB at Harvard College in 1964 and his PhD at the University of Wisconsin in 1968, dedicating much of his career to Human Evolutionary Biology first as professor at SUNY Binghamton before returning to Harvard University in 2005. Philip's contributions to the study of early hominids were widely recognized and continued until this day, and his work left an indelible mark on those who followed in his footsteps.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Philip was a devoted family man. He is survived by his beloved family: his late wife Berit, children Anna and Eric Rightmire, daughter-in-law Annie; and his grandchildren Sofie, Owen, Will, Conor, and Ben, who brought him great joy. He also leaves behind a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and mentees, all of whom will remember his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support.
Philip had a remarkable gift for connecting with others and creating lasting bonds. Whether he was enjoying a quiet moment with family or sharing his knowledge with colleagues, his presence was always a source of warmth and reassurance. He would entertain his friends at his home almost every weekend. His generosity of spirit and wry sense of humor will be greatly missed.
In his free time, Philip was a world traveler, an amazing cook, enjoyed clamming/fishing and walking the dog, and he took great pride in his academic work which was never far from his mind. He traveled throughout Africa and the Asia, looking for the next big fossil find and would spend summers in Sweden. His love for the sciences was matched only by his dedication to bringing more knowledge to the world. Philip's legacy will live on through his many contributions and the positive impact he made on the lives of others.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to National Public Radio (NPR), a cause that was near and dear to Philip's heart, online at: NPR Donation
We are deeply grateful for the time we shared with Philip, and his memory will forever remain a beacon of kindness, wisdom, and love.

Tack för att vi fick lära känna dig, både i USA och på Hamburgön i Sverige. Vi uppskattade dig, både samtalen vi hade och din fina humor och hade sett fram emot ett nytt besök i Sverige. Vila i frid .
