Dr. Gael Patrick Rooney
Age 82, of Morris, Illinois, died peacefully on Tuesday, March 19, 2025, at The Gardens at Park Pointe in Morris.
Born March 12, 1943, in Joliet, Illinois, Gael was the son of George Eugene and Mona M. (Horan) Rooney. He was raised and educated in Joliet, graduating with the Class of 1961 from Joliet Catholic High School. He continued his studies at Lewis University and Northern Illinois University before earning his Doctorate in Science Education from the University of Sarasota in 1978.
On March 8, 1986, Pat married Diane Chouinard, and together they built their life in Morris. His career in education began at Lockport Grade School, where he taught for two years, followed by eight years in the Richland School District. He later served as a coordinator in District 54 in Morris before working in the financial department at Rockdale School District. Beyond education, Pat’s entrepreneurial spirit led him to open Movies by the Mile and operate his own video production company.
Faith and community were central to Pat’s life. He was a devoted member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Morris and proudly served as President of the Grundy County Historical Society. His wide-ranging interests reflected his curiosity and creativity, which throughout the years led him to finding great joy in history, trains, computers, and video production.
Survivors include his brother, Dr. George (Carol) Rooney of Brookfield, WI; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-laws: Gene Funk and Pete Dummitt, both of Morris, Sue Benson and Cherie (Doug) Prosser, both of Shorewood, and Richard “Buz” Chouinard, and Leslie Ambrose who was his primary caregiver, both of Morris, and numerous nieces and nephews, as well as cousins.
Pat was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mona; his wife, Diane, and his sister, Sheila Funk.
The family will receive friends for a visitation at First Baptist Church of Morris, 1650 W. US Route 6 in Morris on Monday, August 25, 2025 from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service 10:00 a.m. Pastor Steve Larson will officiate.
