Gary Bullock, 82, passed away on Thursday, February 22, 2024. He will be remembered as a follower of Jesus Christ, a loving husband, a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and a loyal friend to many.
Gary was born on February 9, 1942, in Miami, Florida, the son of Effie Mae Baxter Guy and Lamar Bruce Guy. He was raised in Alabama on a peanut farm and went on to attend LSU. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, United States Marine Corps, and United States Navy.
Gary was very meticulous as an electrical engineer. He was an outstanding problem solver and firmly believed that if you "do something right, you won't have to do it again." Gary started his career at Tampa Electric Company and went on to become the CEO of Carroll EMC, where he retired in 2000.
In his retirement, Gary fulfilled his dream of playing golf in all 50 states. Every spring, when the azaleas were in bloom, Gary volunteered as a Marshal at The Master's Tournament. Gary was such an enthusiastic golfer that he designed and founded The Seat Caddy for volunteers and spectators of the sport. In 2006, Gary founded the WGA Senior Men's Golf Association. This group started out as just a handful of men who got together to play golf every Thursday and has grown to over 100 golfers. Gary looked forward to the opportunity to fellowship with his fellow golfers every week while playing the sport they all enjoy so much.
In 2017, Gary came out of retirement and became the City Manager for the City of Bowdon. He was instrumental in many projects for the city, including the relocation of City Hall. As he had during his time at Carroll EMC, Gary led with wisdom, compassion, and strength. He loved his work family and truly enjoyed the time he spent serving alongside them.
In 2020, Gary was presented with the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award. His profound impact on business in Carroll County and our community as a whole will forever be remembered and cherished.
The love Gary had for Jesus was evident in every conversation he had. In his travels, he would witness to others on a plane, in a restaurant, wherever he could. He was a true blessing to those around him and sought to serve people every day. Gary was a devoted member of Tabernacle Baptist Church and was an integral part of the building committee.
One of the things that made Gary such an incredible individual was that he never rushed to judgment. He had the unique ability to say the exact right thing at exactly the right time. He was a calming presence in any situation. He spent his life loving and caring for his family and was a fierce friend to many. Throughout his life, he had many titles, but his favorites were Pop, Daddy, and Papa.
Gary leaves behind to cherish his memory his loving wife of 55 years, Kay Bentley Bullock; son & daughter-in-law, Kevin & Lindsay Bullock; daughter, Kelli Bullock; grandchildren, Samantha Coley, Cameron Bullock, Courtney Bullock, and Liam & Bella Woodrum; great-grandson, Noah Coley; and sister & brother-in-law, Janie & Richard Risley.
A funeral service will be held to honor and celebrate Gary's life on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at 2:00 PM from Tabernacle Baptist Church, with Dr. Stephen Allen officiating. Eulogies will be rendered by Kevin Bullock, Jim Chaffin, and Daniel Jackson. Interment will follow in Carroll Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends at Tabernacle Baptist Church on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Tabernacle Baptist Church Major Projects. Contributions may be made by visiting www.tabernacle.org or mailed to 150 Tabernacle Drive, Carrollton, Georgia 30117.
Messages of condolences can be sent to the family at www.martin-hightower.com. Martin & Hightower Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

Gary was instrumental in bringing Waffle House to Bowdon. He was one of the best people that I have worked with and his loss is being deeply felt here. I am greatly saddened that he will not be there with me on opening day. My sincerest condolence to everyone impacted by this tragic loss.

Sincerely,

Gary became a close friend of Bobby Arnold while at Tampa Electric. I also worked with Bobby at Tampa Electric and when I decided to leave, I got a call from Gary Bullock who had heard from Bobby that I wanted to move to Georgia. One visit to Carrollton and Gary hired me on the spot. He was my sponsor, mentor and treated me like a son after my father passed. Working for Gary was a monumental change in my life. His values of honesty and truthfulness will remain forever with me. I am successful today because of Gary. Kay I will miss him so much. No doubt God in Heaven will welcome him with open arms.

I first met Gary when I moved to Auburndale during my sophomore year of high school. I was like a "fish out of water" as a new student. True to Gary's nature and character he made sure I "belonged." We went our separate ways, but each time we met up over the years it was as if we had seen one another the day before. My prayers and thoughts to the family. May you experience the strength and peach of the Lord during these days.

Gary was so passionate and loving for the children at KidsPeace in Bowdon. I remember we were having a Field Day and the dinner was in conflict with another appointment he had to attend. He came by at lunch to give us his apologies in person. He was in a hurry but said, I can't make dinner but I'll take one of those ham sandwiches and tea to go with that smile and laugh he had. As important as he was, he always made you feel you were the important one and he was just the guy next door having a conversation with you.
I will miss him dearly - there was and will always be only one Gary Bullock! My heartfelt condolences to Kay and the family.
