Gary Edwin Hartwig “Twig” born on January 24, 1946, in Perham, MN, passed away on February 9, 2025. A devoted husband, father and grandfather, Gary is survived by his wife Carol; children Jesse (Jess) Hartwig of Perham and Eli (Bridget) Hartwig of Cottage Grove, MN; as well as his grandchildren Keanna (Devyn) Richards, Lainey, Teian, Lenora, and Veda Hartwig; great-granddaughter Isla Richards; brother Donovan (Pam) Hartwig of Fargo, ND; and sister Betty (Pete) Greiff of Perham.
Gary was the son of Wilfred and Lenora (Matz) Hartwig. He was baptized and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church of Corliss Township and attended Perham High School before furthering his education at Staples Community College. He was united in marriage to Carol Ziegler on June 23, 1978.
A skilled machinist, he dedicated his career to his craft while nurturing a deep passion for nature that permeated every aspect of his life. As an avid arborist, train enthusiast, and outdoor lover, he cherished moments spent hunting, fishing, and skiing.
In addition to his hobbies, Gary was proud of his accomplishments, including numerous ice fishing trophies, building his family home in Pine Lake Township, the over 100 species of Hostas he planted and cared for, and his notable big buck wall mount. He also made contributions to his community as a dedicated Boy Scout leader, imparting valuable life skills and fostering a love for nature in the younger generation. He was an active member of his church community, volunteering his time where needed.
Gary is remembered fondly for his kindness, adventurous spirit, and unwavering love for his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Visitation will be 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12, at Schoeneberger Funeral & Cremation Service in Perham. Visitation will resume from 10:00-11:00 a.m. followed by the Memorial Service at 11:00 on Thursday, February 13 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Perham.
