Gary Nelson Obituary
Gary Thomas Nelson, age 76, of Acworth, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 16, 2026.
Gary was born in Jacksonville, FL, on April 13, 1949, the son of the late Dell Williams Nelson and Marvin Leroy Nelson. He was preceded in death by his brother, Frank Nelson.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 44 years, Cathy. Over the years, his pets were his children.
Gary graduated from Wrens High School, then went on to earn degrees from the University of Georgia and his PhD from Georgia State University in Math Education. Gary loved teaching and taught at Kennesaw State University, Longwood University, Ga Gwinnett College, Austin Peay State University, and online for Southern New Hampshire University.
Gary’s hobby was travelling the world, and he especially loved Ireland and Alaska.
He wanted to be part of the community. He volunteered at the Georgia Aquarium and marshalled at numerous golf tournaments. He always looked to see where he could help.
