Gene Gardner Barnes, a beloved family man and dedicated public servant, made his final journey on August 29, 2025, at Richmond County Hospice Haven, surrounded by his devoted family. Born on December 13, 1938, Gene led a life marked by his fun-loving spirit, kindness, and unwavering love for those around him.

After graduating from Stedman High School, Gene proudly served his country in the US Air Force before attending NC State, obtaining his BS Degree in Forestry. A career that spanned for 30 years and became a District Forester covering 8 counties in North Carolina, Gene took great pride in serving his community and protecting the natural environment. His legacy extends beyond his career; he cherished his role as a husband, father, and grandfather, proudly counting his greatest accomplishments as those moments shared with his family.

For 56 years, Gene made an everlasting impact at the First Baptist Church in Rockingham where he served on the Deacon Board and contributed to various other church committees. This commitment reflected his belief in unity and faith, values he instilled in all who knew him.

Gene is survived by his loving wife, Bonnie Hall Barnes; his sons, William Scott Barnes, and Ronald Gene Barnes (Kari); his cherished grandchildren, Conner, Carley, Scarlet, and Briton. He is also mourned by his friends and community who carry forward the memories of spending time with him, reminiscing about the joy and warmth he brought to every gathering.

He was predeceased by his parents, Walton K. Barnes and Eva Mae Cashwell Barnes, as well as his brothers, Kinchen Barnes and Landis Barnes. Their memories live on in the stories shared among family and friends, a testament to the enduring impact Gene had on those who were fortunate to know him.

A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2025, from 1:15 PM to 2:15 PM, followed by a Funeral Service at 2:30 PM, both taking place at the First Baptist Church of Rockingham with Rev. Phillip Spears and Rev. Jack Lee officiating. Interment will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park with Military Honors. As his family and friends gather to celebrate his life, they will share in the laughter, love, and memories that Gene passionately fostered throughout his years.

While Gene may no longer walk among us, the values he embodied and the love he exuded will be forever cherished in the hearts of all who loved him. His legacy continues through the lives he touched and the family he adored.
