Lucy “Gene” Tatum, 84, of Amarillo, TX returned to her heavenly father on December 28, 2025.
Memorial service will be at 10:00 AM, Friday, January 2, 2026 at Church of Christ at the Colonies. Arrangements are by Boxwell Brothers Funeral Directors.
Gene was born October 14, 1941 in Lovington, NM to Hobdy and Irma Gann. She graduated from Lovington High School in 1959 then earned a Bachelors Degree in Education from Eastern New Mexico University. Gene married Donald Tatum on February 14, 1960 in Lovington, NM.
Gene earned her Masters Degree from West Texas A&M. She taught 3rd grade and worked in the library at Whittier Elementary. Gene was a member of the Church of Christ at the Colonies for 23 years where she was known at “The Cookie Lady”. She enjoyed baking, praying, and reading. For many years, Gene would donate her baking to the Ronald McDonald house.
Gene is survived by her husband Donald Tatum; son, Nathan Tatum and wife Michele of Amarillo, TX; sister, Ann Walker and husband Robert of Kansas City, MO; grandchildren, Alex Tatum of Amarillo, TX and Krista Hesson and husband Tradd of Amarillo, TX; and great-granddaughter, Freya.
