Troy,
After living a life placing others before herself, Geneva C. (Mitchell) McCrea went home
to be with the Lord on October 2, 2024.
Geneva was born on March 25, 1928, in Presque Isle, Maine to George W. and Grace
L. (McBrierty) Mitchell. She grew up on a farm in Etna Maine and graduated from
Newport High School in 1946. She then went on to receive her Nursing certificate from
Boston Psychopathic Hospital Affiliate School of Nursing in 1948.
She worked as a registered nurse for many years, bringing her long career of caring for
others to a close when she retired from Bethesda Home in Aberdeen, South Dakota in
March 1993.
Knowing how much her family meant to her, meant that Geneva would often work the
overnight shift in order to spend time with family members during the day. She was her
family's biggest supporter and loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and
great grandchildren as often as practical.
Geneva loved solving crossword puzzles and playing cards. Whether playing cribbage,
canasta, rummy, or slap jack, her card playing skills were legendary! Another
remarkable skill was her cooking. Rarely did Thanksgiving or Christmas Day pass
without Geneva preparing a magnificent holiday meal for her family, the ones she kept
so near and dear to her heart.
Geneva married George N. McCrea on December 26, 1953, in Newport, Maine. They
made their home in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, before moving to Aberdeen, South
Dakota in June 1968, where they resided for many years. Geneva returned to Maine in
May 2014 in order to spend her remaining years with her five siblings and their families.
Geneva is survived by three sons, Dale (Cindy) McCrea Sr. of Rapid City, SD, Don
(Vicki) McCrea of Sioux Falls, SD and David McCrea of Troy, ME; four grandchildren,
Dawn Ann (Troy) Syhre of Brookings, SD, Dale (Angela) McCrea Jr of Glencoe, MN,
Kris (Jen) Russell of Omaha, NE and Jenna McCrea of Minneapolis, MN; nine great
grandchildren, Elizabeth (Jaden), Myranda, Dale III, Abbigail, Isabelle, Hayley, Ethan,
Liam and Cullen; two brothers Don (Betty) Mitchell of Etna ME and Dale (Diane)
Mitchell of Newport ME; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George McCrea, a daughter, Jean Helen,
her parents George and Grace, and brothers Fred (Anita) and Glenn, and sisters
Winnie, Trina, and Thelma (Elmer).
A celebration of her life will be held in May 2025 in Etna, Maine with an internment at
that time.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Aberdeen Humane Society, 2511 385 th
Ave S, Aberdeen, South Dakota, 57401.
