Genevieve Yalitza Eileen Tarango, 16, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025, in her mother's arms at Valley Children's Hospital in Madera, California, after a courageous and inspiring battle with brain cancer.
Genevieve was born on May 20, 2009, in Bakersfield, California, to her devoted mother, Janette Monique Tarango. She was a proud resident of Bakersfield, where she grew up surrounded by the love of her family and friends. A bright and determined student, Genevieve attended Mira Monte High School, where she earned a place on the honor roll throughout her freshman year, a reflection of her strong spirit and determination despite all odds.
At the tender age of seven, Genevieve was diagnosed with medulloblastoma, a rare and aggressive form of brain cancer. Though the battle left her wheelchair-bound, Genevieve never once complained. She faced every challenge with bravery, dignity, and a heart full of gratitude. Even after overcoming her first battle with cancer, she continued to experience health challenges, yet her beautiful spirit remained unshaken.
Genevieve was known for her joyful heart, generous nature, and unwavering optimism. She had a deep love for museums, Legos, arts and crafts, and most of all, spending time with her family and friends. Her laughter, kindness, and warm presence brought light to every room she entered.
In January 2025, Genevieve was diagnosed again-this time with two inoperable high-grade glioblastomas located on her brain stem. She underwent radiation and chemotherapy at Children's Hospital Los Angeles. Before completing treatment, she developed a severe respiratory infection and was later transferred to Valley Children's Hospital, where she was diagnosed with fungal pneumonia and placed on a ventilator. After three weeks of fighting, Genevieve miraculously recovered and returned home, where she enjoyed nine precious days with her loved ones. Unfortunately, her health declined once again, and she was readmitted to the ICU. After six more days of fighting with incredible strength and grace, Genevieve passed away peacefully.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her beloved uncle Stevie Cobos and her cherished great-grandmother Genevieve Cobos, after whom she was named.
She is survived by her loving mother Janette Monique Tarango, her extended family, and countless friends whose lives were forever touched by her strength, light, and love.
Genevieve's life was a powerful reminder of how much beauty and courage can be held in one soul. Her memory will continue to inspire all who knew her.
