Genevieve "Gingie" McDade Tuthill, 82, formerly of Newburyport, Rowley, and Ipswich, MA passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, August 22, 2021. She was the wife of 60 years of Joseph E. Tuthill, MD. She was born on July 15, 1939, in Scranton, PA, daughter of the late John B. and Genevieve (Hayes) McDade. Gingie is predeceased by her beloved siblings John McDade, MD, Congressman Joseph M. McDade, and Mary Gene Butler. She was deeply proud of her Irish heritage.
Gingie graduated from Marywood Seminary High School in Scranton and received a bachelor's degree from Georgetown University School of Nursing in 1961. She and Joe met and fell in love as undergraduates at Georgetown. She worked in several Washington DC, Boston, and North Shore Massachusetts hospitals, and for Newburyport Medical Associates. She was an active volunteer at Immaculate Conception Parish, Anna Jaques Hospital, the Newburyport YWCA, Governor Dummer Academy, and Pingree School. A member of the Newburyport Garden Club for forty-eight years, she was a talented gardener. Gingie always enthusiastically took on numerous leadership roles in the organizations with which she was associated.
While raising her children and volunteering, she pursued numerous passions, including raising standard poodles, training and showing her dogs, owning and riding horses, hunting, eventing, and trail riding across New England and in Ireland for nearly forty years. Gingie was a sports enthusiast who excelled at swimming and field hockey in her youth, and tennis, skiing, and golf, all of which she took up in her adult years. She enjoyed playing competitive bridge and was learning mahjong. Gingie and Joe loved to travel throughout the US and Europe. She was fun-loving, had a great sense of humor, loved planning cultural outings with her children and grandchildren, led her family and friends on many adventures, and would never miss a party. Gingie was faithful and spiritual and shared that part of her life generously. Her happiest days were spent on Plum Island at "Plum Loco" with her children, grandchildren, and dear friends.
In addition to her husband, Gingie is survived by her son, J. Mark Tuthill, MD of Michigan (Linda); three daughters, Mary Gene Clavin (John), Betsy Farrell (Tom), and Catherine Batchelder (Bill), all of Newburyport; and one sister, Ann Dwyer of Illinois. She was the proud and loving grandmother of fourteen grandchildren, Dylan, Hadley, and Cassidy Tuthill, Morgan (Tuthill) Ervin, Abigail, Cassie, and Mary Caroline Clavin, Patrick, Maggie, Matthew, and Anna Farrell, Will, Callie, and Cecelia Batchelder. Gingie was from a large family and had numerous beloved nieces, nephews, in-laws, and so many dear friends throughout the country. Her smile, laugh, and joie de vivre will be so sadly missed by all.
Relatives and friends are invited to a Memorial Mass at St. Rose of Lima Church, 12 Park Street, Topsfield, MA on Saturday, August 28, 2021, at 10:30 AM. Calling hours will be on Friday, August 27, 2021, from 4-7 PM, at Elliott, Woodworth & Rogers, 35 Green Street, Newburyport, MA.
