George Lee Basham, 82, of Custer, Kentucky, passed away on Veteran's Day, November 11, 2025. George was born on July 5, 1943 in Webster, Ky to the late George Franklin Basham and Mary Ruth Goodman. An American hero, George served the country he loved during the Vietnam War in the United States Army. To protect his brother from being drafted, he volunteered to serve a second tour.
George was a devoted member of the Garfield Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a proud member of the Bewleyville Masonic Lodge and retired from Marley Cooling Tower Company in 2002 after 33 years of dedicated service. Following his retirement, he enjoyed working with his brother Bobby in the log woods.
He was known for his deep love of family. George always supported his grandchildren in whatever they chose to do - whether it be basketball games, wrestling matches, cow shows, beauty pageants, or working on cars - he was more than happy to be there.
George enjoyed hunting, farming, and riding his Harley. He and Polly traveled many miles all over the United States. If you stopped by for a visit the TV was most likely tuned to a UK basketball game, professional wrestling, or a show about restoring antique cars. One of his prized possessions was his restored 1955 Chevy. Known for his quick wit and easygoing nature, George brought joy and laughter to everyone around him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings: Betty Daugherty, JoAnn VanHorn, William Basham, and Vera Simpson.
George is survived by his loving wife, Pauline "Polly" Basham. His daughters: Tina Allen, her husband Travis and their sons Logan (Peyton) and Lucas; Tiffany Tabor and her husband Jody, and their daughters Natalee and Emily. He also had one great-grandson Slade Allen.
A brother, Bobby Basham and his wife Nancy.
Step-Daughter Teresa Gibson and her five children.
George will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generous heart, and lifelong devotion to his family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Trent Dowell Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at 9 AM with burial at 11:30 AM in the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery Central in Radcliff, Kentucky. Visitation will be held at Trent-Dowell Funeral Home on Tuesday, November 18, 2025, from 2:00–7:00 PM. All times are central. Expressions of sympathy are suggested to the Wounded Warrior Project.
