"I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is
laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that
day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing."
II Timothy 4: 7-8
George Riley Cabarrus, was born on December 26, 1943, to the late Ionia Cabarrus Buck and
William Jordan Blount in Creswell, North Carolina. He was reared in the area of his birth by his
grandparents, James and Leila Cabarrus. Later in life, he gained another father, the late Deacon
Herny Buck, Sr. On Friday evening, the Lord dispatched his angels to his home to take him to his
heavenly home.
At an early age, George left North Carolina and journeyed to New York. He became employed and
began working at Gil Golde. The company later decided to locate a facility on the Eastern Shore
and George was chosen to spear head and supervise the move and manage the facility. He worked
there for several years and later became employed with the Vrrginia Department of Transportation
(VDOT) for thirty years.
After retirement, George could always be found in his yard, his garden, sitting under the tree
(watching the cars go by), on his deck, or the Shore Stop parking lot. He eventually became a
member of the Hardees gang (until COVID). Once the restaurants reopened, the group moved
across the street to McDonald's. George, Earnest, Tony, Shorty, Marvin, Cleveland, and Melvin
would meet there every morning.
George became a member of Bethel Baptist Church, where he attended faithfully until his illness.
He served in several capacities, to include President of the Male Chorus for forty-three years, the
Senior Usher ministry, culinary ministry, church bus driver, and custodian. He was well known by
many, up and down the Delmarva Peninsula for his diligence with the Male Chorus.
He was preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; granddaughter, Jamaya; sister, Mattie; a
very special aunt, Mariah; and several other relatives.
He leaves to cherish fond memories: his companion, Francine Williams; sons, Eric Williams, Sr.,
of Newport' News, VA, and Deric Williams, Sr. (Cherelle), of Virginia Beach, VA; a young man
who was like a son to him, Genard Williams (Nory) of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Eric, Jr.,
Farrah, Deric, Jr., Gabriel, Savannah, and Scarlett; sister, Dr. Cynthia Buck; brother, Herny Buck,
Jr. (Judith); and a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives, and close friends, including a friend
from VDOT he treated like a son, Nick Jenkins; and his adopted families, The Burton and Mapp families.
