George Hugh Campbell Jr passed away peacefully on April 11, 2025 at Lima Estates in Media, PA. He was 99 years old.
The son of George Hugh and Elizabeth (nee Kerr) Campbell, he was born in Philadelphia and raised in Ardmore PA. A 1943 graduate of Lower Merion High School, he was drafted into the Army in early 1944. After basic training he was assigned to the Pacific Theatre as part of the 519th Military Police Battalion and arrived in Luzon, Philippines as the battle was winding down. He then fought through the entire 82-day battle of Okinawa and stayed on the island as a military police officer.
Upon discharge from the Army he returned to Ardmore, working various jobs. Eventually he became a postal carrier at the Wynnewood Post Office and worked there for over 30 years until retiring in the 1980s.
George loved all things sports, especially football. During parts of the 1950s and 1960s he was an Eagles season ticket holder and proudly held onto his ticket stub from when they won the National Football League Championship game at Franklin Field in 1960. An avid Philadelphia Athletics fan, he enjoyed going to A's games at Shibe Park.
After retiring, George turned his focus to high school sports. Having moved to Havertown he could be seen at almost every Haverford High School contest. Whether it was football, basketball, baseball, hockey or lacrosse, girls or boys' sports, George could be seen in the stands. Parents asked him to video record the girls' basketball and softball games which he did for many years becoming part of the high school sports family. For all his volunteer work with the teams, he was inducted into the Haverford High School Sports Hall of Fame.
A voracious lifelong learner, mainly on historical themes, George was often found at the Haverford Township Free Library. He daily visited the library to sit and read the newspaper. When Covid struck, he would drive to the library and sit in the parking lot so he could use the WIFI to continue reading and learning. Sharp minded his whole life; he was a sociable conversationalist to all. As soon as he moved to Lima Estates in 2023, he became a beloved member of the community.
George was pre-deceased by his siblings, Elizabeth (Betty), James (Jimmy), Isabel and Robert. He is survived by six nieces and nephews and their families, as well as his extended family of friends from the Haverford High School community.
Family and friends may visit at Chadwick & McKinney Funeral Home, 30 E Athens Ave, Ardmore on Monday, April 21, 2025 from 12 noon to 1:00 pm with a funeral service immediately following. Burial will be private.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in George's memory to the Haverford Twp Free Library capital campaign via their website or to the Lima Estates Samaritan Fund, 411 N Middletown Rd, Media PA, 19063.
