George B. "Bud" Corwin, 95, died peacefully at home on May 22, 2022 after a lengthy illness.
Born in New Paltz, New York on March 26, 1927, Bud was the son of the late John and Frances (Bauer) Corwin and spent his childhood in the New Paltz.
As a young man, Bud enlisted in the United States Navy in 1945 and proudly served aboard the newly commissioned USS Franklin D. Roosevelt CVB 42.
Upon discharge from the Navy, Bud attended and graduated from New Paltz Teachers College where he earned his teaching degree. He spent his career, from 1950 to 1985, teaching and in school administration in the Lakeland Central School District, Westchester County, New York. His first teaching role was as an elementary school teacher at Toddville Elementary School and in 1956, he became Principal of Shrub Oak Elementary School. Two years later, he took on the role of Principal at George Washington Elementary School and in 1973, became Acting Assistant Superintendent of the Lakeland Central School District. The next year, he was appointed Assistant Superintendent and remained in that role until his retirement in 1985.
Bud's companion in life was his beloved wife, Jean. They met on the first day of college and married on August 20, 1950. Together, they shared so many wonderful interests and adventures. A love of the water, boating and waterskiing brought them to Candlewood Lake in Connecticut for many summers. In the spring and fall, they found enjoyment aboard their Honda Goldwing motorcycle, which they toured many miles across the country with Bud's sister and brother-in-law, Doris and John McElhenney of New Paltz. In the winter, Bud and Jean took to the northern New York trails in Lake George and Old Forge on their snowmobile. And throughout the years, they enjoyed going on country rides in their convertible, with the top down as often as the weather permitted! Bud and Jean also shared their homes with several lucky small dogs, who were treasured and doted upon.
Bud was a devoted member of the Reformed Church of America (RCA) and was active with the Hopewell Reformed Church and the First Reformed Church of Fishkill where he was a member of their church choirs.
Bud mourned Jean's death, his wife of 69 years, in 2019. He is also predeceased by his sister Doris (2011), with whom he shared a close and loving relationship. He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Francine Steeger of Norwalk, CT, Joanne McElhenney of Marblehead, MA, John McElhenney of Broken Arrow, OK, and Jay McElhenney of Boerne, TX. Bud will be remembered - by family, friends, colleagues and community - as a true gentleman and the kindest of souls.
Donations may be made in Bud's memory to Hopewell Hose Fire Company #1, where Bud was an honorary member, and to the Dutchess County SPCA.
Calling hours will be held on Thursday, May 26, from 10:30am-11:00am, at the First Reformed Church of Fishkill, 1153 Main Street, Fishkill, NY. Funeral services will follow, then burial at Hopewell Cemetery with military honors.
