George Robert Custance, age 83, passed away Monday, September 29, 2025 at Parmly on the Lake Sr. Living in Chisago City, MN.

George was born March 5, 1942 in New York, New York to parents George and Nora (Folliard) Custance.

George was inducted into the U.S. Army in March 1964 and there he completed training at the Army Signal Corps School, Ft. Gordon, GA as an Infantry Communications Specialist. He was assigned to the 28th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division, Ft. Riley, Kansas, and served a tour in Vietnam, until Feb. 1966, when he completed his military service. He was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal.

On his return to the U.S., he enrolled in college and received a Master of Arts (History) degree from Hunter College, NYC. He worked for 23 years for the government of New York State. (State Liquor Authority as an investigator) George loved reading and was a lifelong researcher. He loved learning about history. He is the author of several published articles on national defense. George was a lifelong member of the John V. Daniels Jr. VFW Post 2813 since 1985 and a past Commander (1990-1991) of the Post. He was also a member of Knights of Columbus, and Catholic War Vets. He moved to Lindstrom, Minnesota in 2014 to be near his family.

George is survived by his sister, Mary Schlumbohm; nephews, Bill (Gail), and Mike (Stacy); many great nieces and nephews, other extended family, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, William "Bill" Schlumbohm.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held for George 11:00 AM Friday, October 17, 2025 at the St. Bridget of Sweden Catholic Church in Lindstrom, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery in Forest Lake, MN.
