George Evans was born May 1, 1934 in Annapolis, Maryland. He attended Annapolis High School and graduated from the University of Maryland in 1957. He served in the United States Army for two years at Fort Jackson, Columbia, South Carolina. After his service in the Army, he worked at Farmers National Bank in Annapolis before moving to Atlanta to work as a Federal Assistant National Bank Examiner for three years. He worked for eleven years at First National Bank in Commerce, now known as First Commerce Bank. He worked at Fulton County Bank in Alpharetta for four years before returning to become President and CEO of The Bank of Banks in Homer, with branches at Banks Crossing and Maysville. The bank was later sold to First National Bank of Gainesville, retaining the name The Bank of Banks until it was sold to Regions Bank. George retired from Regions Bank on April 30, 1999 having 49 years of experience in banking. George served as Business Development Advisor with First Georgia Banking Company, now known as Certus Bank, for two and a half years, rounding out 50 plus years in banking.

George and Martha Wise of Atlanta were married October 7, 1961 at First Methodist Church in Atlanta. They had three children, Marilyn E. Roberts of Powder Springs, Ed Evans of Murphy, NC and Doug Evans of Watkinsville. They had five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. George and Martha were married for 64 years.

George served as President of the Kiwanis Club in Commerce in 1991 and 1992, President of The Chamber of Commerce in Homer for four years, was a member of The Lions Club of Commerce from 1963 to 1974, and in Alpharetta. He held many positions at Commerce First Methodist Church serving on the Administrative Board, Chairman of the Pastor Parish Relations Committee, Stewardship Chairman and Finance Chairman in Commerce and Alpharetta First Methodist Church. He was President of the Ruritan Club in Homer, served on the Planning Committee of Banks County for four years and the Jackson Electric Operation Round-Up Board (enabling persons or organizations deserving assistance). He was President of the Northridge Mended Hearts Chapter 171 in Commerce for seven years. This organization gave support to heart patients and their families. For many years he was privileged to serve on the board of Small Business Access Partners in Gainesville.

In his spare time, George loved working in his garden and enjoyed sharing fruits and vegetables with everyone he knew. Next to gardening, he loved to fish and he also loved to share the fish he caught with his friends.

He has been a longtime member of Commerce First Methodist Church in Commerce and associate member of Ashford Memorial Methodist Church in Watkinsville.

Funeral services were held at 2 PM, Monday, January 12 at Beaverdam Baptist Church with Rev. Joshua Carr and Rev. Cody Kuykendall officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. The family received friends at the funeral home Sunday from 2 to 4 PM.

Little-Ward Funeral Home, Commerce was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. George was my friend, and an old friend. He was a Gentleman, we shared lots of conversations. Laugh's. I worked on his gas appliances for many years. Never s cross word. He and Mrs Martha were always such wonderful people. To the family you will be in our prayers and we cherish the good memories of Mr George God bless you in this time and times to come.
