George Gifford Grounds

George Gifford Grounds was born on December 15, 1942, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Herbert Wesley Grounds and Gertrude Sullivan Grounds. He passed away on December 28, 2025, leaving this earth to be reunited with his beloved wife, Alice.

In 1959, George moved with his family from Toledo, Ohio, to Gainesville, Texas, as part of a relocation with National Supply, joining 87 other families who made the journey together. He attended Gainesville High School and graduated in 1960. George continued his education at the University of North Texas before proudly serving his country in the United States Navy.

During his naval service, George commissioned the aircraft carrier USS America, where he served as a Gunner’s Mate. While stationed in Massachusetts, he met Alice on a blind date. They fell in love, married, and began their life and family together. Following his honorable military service, George and his young family moved to Las Vegas, Nevada, and later to Gainesville, Texas, which he proudly called home.

George was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church and was known for his servant’s heart, always willing to lend a helping hand. He served his community in many ways, including volunteering for many years on the Frank Buck Zoo Board. He was also an active member of the JayCees, Rotary Club, Optimist Club, Shriners, and was a devoted Mason.

George worked for Weber Aircraft and later for the Ben E. Keith Corporation, where he retired. He will be remembered as a devoted provider, loving husband, caring father, and loyal friend. He had a contagious laugh, enjoyed a good joke, and truly never met a stranger.

He is survived by his daughters Ginny Grounds of Fort Worth and Deanna Harris (Bill Harris) of Gainesville; his grandson Jacob Harris (Breanna Harris) of Lubbock; his granddaughter Madeline Harris of Dallas; and his great-granddaughter Anna’vae Harris of Lubbock. He is also survived by his brother Herb Grounds (Jenny Grounds), nephew David Grounds (Fernanda Grounds), and niece Julie Grounds, all of Arizona.

George’s legacy of love and service endures, and his family takes comfort in knowing he is with Mom and has been welcomed home to eternal peace through his faith.

The family will receive friends at Geo. J. Carroll & Son Funeral Home on Friday, January 2, 2026 beginning at 11:00 AM. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 PM with Rev. Dave Starr officiating. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery.
