George Fredrick Lehrer

George Fredrick Lehrer, 89, passed away peacefully on the morning of Wednesday, August 27, 2025, with his devoted wife of 64 years, Barbara Lehrer, by his side.

George left this world exactly where he wanted to — in front of his living room window overlooking his favorite view of life: the quiet river where the animals cross and the woods he adored. It was a place of peace and beauty, a setting that reflected his deep love for nature and the simple, meaningful moments that defined his life.

Born on April 19, 1936, in Appleton, Wisconsin to Marjorie and Sylvester Lehrer. George grew up with a deep love for the land and a tireless spirit of integrity and purpose. A gifted student, he graduated as valedictorian of Freedom High School in 1954. His path then led him north to Michigan Technological University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Forestry. His passion for stewardship of the natural world continued as he pursued and achieved a master’s degree from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point.

In September 1961, George answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Army as a member of the 32nd Division in the National Guard. It was also in 1961, on August 26 in Menasha, Wisconsin, that he began a lifelong journey with his beloved Barbara. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, hard work, and unwavering love, raising four sons—Mark, Anthony, Matthew, and David—who carry forward his values and strength.

George dedicated his professional life to the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture as a respected plant and pest specialist, helping to protect and sustain the natural beauty of his home state. His work was more than a career; it was a calling, deeply aligned with his love of the outdoors.

George found joy in the simple, enduring things—time spent in the woods, working with his hands, and hunting across Wisconsin’s forests and fields. He had a deep passion for woodworking, especially with character wood, where every knot and grain told a story. His creations were more than objects; they were reflections

of his patience, craftsmanship, and respect for the natural world. George also owned and operated a Christmas tree farm, a labor of love that brought joy to families year after year and reflected his dedication to the land. A proud member of the Wisconsin Woodland Owners Association, Ducks Unlimited, and the NRA, George surrounded himself with communities that shared his reverence for nature, tradition, and conservation.

George was preceded in death by his parents, Marjorie and Sylvester, as well as his brother Daniel and in-laws Marilyn, Jan, and Wayne.

His memory lives on through his loving wife Barbara; his brothers Lee, John, and Mark (Jackie); his sisters Ruth and Marian; and his sons Mark (Colleen), Anthony, Matthew (Carmen), and Luke. He leaves behind a legacy in his grandchildren: Zachary, Chandler, Kaleb, Ondrea, Samantha, Brienna, Hailey, Logan, Jacob, Elizabeth, Olivia, Joshua, and Emily; and great-grandchildren Addison and Paul, all of whom carry forward his steadfast spirit and enduring love.

George Fredrick Lehrer was a man of the woods, of wisdom, and of quiet strength. His life was a testament to service, family, and the enduring beauty of nature.

Though he has returned to the forest in which he loved so deeply, his roots remain strong in the hearts of all who knew him.

He will be deeply missed.
