George Lewis Obituary

George Ray Lewis, 91, of Burnt Hills, New York, entered peacefully into Eternity on September 29, 2025, surrounded by his family. George's journey began on July 20, 1934 when he was born in Cleveland, Ohio. The family soon moved to Tionesta, Pennsylvania where he was raised on his family's farm. There he learned the values of hard work and devotion that would define his character throughout his life.

He graduated from Tionesta High School in 1952 and quickly entered the workforce. While working on the New York State Thruway in Fort Plain, his focus on work was forever changed when a young woman caught his eye-Joan Dorothy Mabbett. From that moment, the worksite faded from view for Joan had captured his heart. They became inseparable and were married in 1955. In the years that followed, George and Joan made homes in Stoneboro, PA; Plattsburgh, and Massena, NY as George pursued construction work with the union. Each move was more than a job site-it was another step in building their life together. It was in Massena that they embarked on their greatest journey of all: becoming parents.

George's work ethic and leadership skills shone brightly in 1960 when he entered into a business partnership with S.E. Percy to form Percy-Lewis Inc. The same year he welcomed his second son and moved into their home in Glenville where he raised his family. Shortly after, he became the proud owner of G.R. Lewis Construction Co., a business in which his boys worked alongside of him and continued on with his legacy.

He loved helping others and put that love into action by becoming a First Responder in the East Glenville Fire department. George served as the Fire Chief from 1973-1975 and became a life time member there. He was also a member of the Mason/Shriner's Association and the Clifton Park Elks Lodge.

His interests centered around his family. They shared experiences such as snowmobiling, boating, and camping. George's adventurous spirit also led him on RV explorations across the country. Throughout their travels, Joan and George made countless friends through the Good Sam and FMCA clubs.

George was a devoted father to his children, George "Steven" (Parima) Lewis and Rodney (Tiffany) Lewis; a loving grandfather to Jason (Amy Staines) Lewis, Ashley (Scott) Salmon, and Cara Ebling (Daniel); and a blessed great-grandfather to Gloriana and Dean Salmon. His family was the center of his world, and he was grateful to share his life with his beloved wife of 70 years and seven months, Joan Lewis. He was predeceased by his parents, George M. and Lottie (Pennell) Lewis. George's presence will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but his impact will continue to resonate in the hearts and lives of his family and friends.

Family and friends are invited to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 547 Saratoga Road in Glenville, New York, on Monday, October 6th. Calling hour is from 10 - 11 AM followed by a Celebration of Life & Resurrection Service at 11 led by Pastor Deron Milleville and Pastor Tiffany Lewis. Burial will take place immediately following the service at Jonesville Cemetery.
