Dallas lost a beloved coach and father on Sunday, March 12, 2023 with the untimely passing of George Stephen McBride. Friends and family were saddened to learn of his death at age 61 from cardiac-related issues.
Coach Steve, as he was widely known, was born in Dallas on December 13, 1961 to Elizabeth Jewel McBride and George D L McBride. He attended First Baptist Academy in Dallas and subsequently went on to graduate with both a B.S. and M.S. in Health & Kinesiology from East Texas State University where he excelled as a scholar and athlete. He became a proud member of Kappa Alpha Order fraternity and also distinguished himself as a key player on the school's Football team.
After college, Steve married Karen McPherson in 1983 and they began their 36 years of marriage together which blessed them with their two beloved children. Katherine Leigh Foxall and Greggory Stephen McBride.
Coach McBride began his teaching career in the 1980's at various prestigious private and public schools in the North Texas area, as well as East Texas State University and Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. Over the following years, he touched the lives of scores of student athletes and became known as one of the greatest Track & Field and football coaches in our region across multiple generations. His core vision centered on cultivating knowledge, creativity, flexibility and inquisitiveness within his students which he believed to be traits necessary for both academic and extracurricular sports achievements.
Steve trained and mentored athletes from around the country, instilling a positive outlook and the skills needed to achieve any task and overcome any obstacle. He was the Founder of The Track and Field Coaches Clinic of Texas as well as the Co-Executive Director of the Texas Track & Field Coaches Association. He also acted as a liaison to the Dallas Marathon high school relay and worked at various sports camps in the area, and was a mainstay volunteer every summer at Grays Harbor Football Camp in
Hoquiam, WA. Coach McBride's philosophy of engagement empowering excellence extended beyond the playing fields and classrooms to the broader community where his students continued their careers and accomplishments.
He is survived by his former wife Karen McPherson of Dallas, his daughter Katherine Foxall and her fiancé, Ben Sidlow of
Royse City, TX, son Greggory McBride and daughter-in-law Michelle McBride of
Frisco, TX, granddaughter Taylor Foxall, and countless other family and friends all of whom will miss his gifted service, generous spirit, caring connections, boisterous laugh, and eternal indefatigable good humor.
A memorial and celebration of life is planned for Sunday, April 23rd from 2:00-4:00 p.m. at North Dallas Funeral Home, 2710 Valley View Lane,
Dallas, TX 75234. Services will be led by one of Steve's former students, pastor Ryan Heller of Prosper.
