JACKSON, SC - Mr. George Ray McClain, 74, beloved husband of Sharon Downs McClain, passed away Sunday, August 24, 2025. He was in his home surrounded by his loving family.
George dedicated over 34 years of his life to being a maintenance mechanic at Pactiv Corporation. After retiring once, he returned to the workforce to craft gun barrels for Jarrett Rifles for an additional five years before fully retiring. In addition to his career, George was a proud third-degree mason. He actively contributed to his community through the Hopewell Masonic Lodge #127 in Jackson, SC, reflecting his strong sense of service and commitment to helping others. He also served in the U.S. Army Reserves for six years, demonstrating his dedication to his country.
George had a passion for sports, particularly enjoying the thrill of Silver Bluff and Alabama football seasons. He cherished playing baseball and took great delight in teaching the game to his grandsons. Above all, family was the cornerstone of his life. He loved them dearly and devoted his time to nurturing those relationships.
George is survived by his beloved wife, Sharon D. McClain, with whom he shared nearly 44 wonderful years. He is also survived by his brother, William “Gerald” McClain (Vickie); his son, Christopher “Troy” McClain (Lindsey); his daughters, Heather M. McClain and Mallory B. Evans (Caleb); along with one nephew, two nieces, and nine grandchildren, who will miss him dearly.
George was preceded in death by his parents, George G. McClain and Mollie W. McClain, and his brother, Gary E. McClain.
Visitation will be held on August 26, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home in Aiken, SC. A funeral service will take place on August 27, 2025, at 2:00 PM at Shellhouse-Rivers Funeral Home, followed by interment at Green Pond Baptist Church Cemetery in Jackson, SC, at 3:30 PM. Pallbearers will include Chris McClain, Duran McClain, Mark Edwards, Gurney Wiggins, Tim Crane, and Jerry Best.
George Ray McClain’s life and legacy will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
