George S. Newman, 90, of Chambersburg, PA, passed away on Sunday, June 15, 2025, at his home. Born November 27, 1934 in Waterfall, PA, he was the son of the late Howard O. “Sam” Newman and Bertha M. “Mae” McCaulley Newman.
George was employed as a building contractor for 19 years with Mack Horton Building Supply in McConnellsburg. He was later employed as a mail carrier for 30 years, a substitute teacher at Franklin County Vo-Tech, and also at the Cumberland Valley Animal Shelter. George was a member of St. James United Brethren Church in Chambersburg where he served as a church board member, was Head of the Personnel Relations Committee as a Trustee, and was the head maintenance technician. He enjoyed working on lawn mowers, sitting on the porch, and could fix anything and everything. George also enjoyed spending time at his camp in Potter County, hunting and being in the outdoors.
He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Marlene E. DeShong Newman, whom he married on February 11, 1953; two sons, Arnold “Craig” Newman of Burnt Cabins, and Kerwin Newman of Chambersburg; two grandchildren, Crystal Damiano and husband Dominic of Fayetteville, and Jordan Newman of Burnt Cabins; three great-grandsons, Crashawn, Cadyn, and Camryn Newman; one great-great granddaughter Amira; and his sister, Dorothy Vazzola, of WV. Aside from his parents, George was preceded in death by two daughters-in-law, Bonnie Newman and Monique Newman.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM on Monday, June 23, 2025. in the chapel of Thomas L. Geisel Funeral Home, 333 Falling Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA. Rev. Murray B. Stevens will officiate. Interment will follow the service in Parklawns Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 10:30 – 11:30 AM at the funeral home prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James United Brethren Church, 2398 Warm Spring Road, Chambersburg, PA 17202.
