Obituary published on Legacy.com by C. C. Carter Funeral Home, Inc. - Newport News on May 3, 2024.
On Thursday, May 2, 2024, while surrounded by her family, God quietly ushered Georgetta "Pulley" Swann into eternal rest. She gained her wings, became our forever angel, and took her place beside her beloved, Mickey.
Born to the late George and Dora Pulley on November 29, 1932, in Nash County, NC, Georgetta was the fourth of nine children. After graduating from Spring Hope High School, she attended Hampton Training School for Nurses, Inc. in Hampton, VA, and became a registered nurse, a career she loved dearly.
Georgetta was raised in church and gave her life to the Lord at an early age. Unsurprisingly, she met the love of her life, the late James "Mickey" Swann, at Denbigh Baptist Church. After 5 years of him chasing her, she finally agreed to go out with him. They were happily married on November 26, 1955. Three children were born from this union: James Jr., Evangeline, and George. Georgetta worked tirelessly as a nurse at Riverside Hospital in
Newport News, VA, where she retired after 40 years of dedicated service.
Together, the couple worked hard to provide for their children, ensuring their wants and needs were always met. As they became empty-nesters, they opened their hearts and home to other children, caring for them as if they were their own. Georgetta, affectionately referred to as "Nana," beamed with pride and joy when "her babies," now adults, would come and visit with her. Her impact on their young lives will be felt forever.
Georgetta was the last of the founding members of the New Hope Baptist Church. She was very active and diligently served as the President of the Missionaries. She loved attending the services, especially the Noon-Day Bible studies. Even in her final days, she enjoyed reading her Bible or listening to someone read it to her.
As a Southern girl, Georgetta loved to cook and bake. But what she loved even more was sharing her kitchen delights with family and friends. Her specialties were her 12-layer chocolate cakes and homemade biscuits. She never let you leave her home hungry or empty-handed. Georgetta was a true hostess.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 62 years, James A. Swann, Sr., and her 4 sisters: Eula Harris, Willie Francis, Mertie Moore, and Susie Perry.
She is survived by her 3 children, James Swann, Jr. (LeNeva), Evangeline Greene (James), George "Tony" Swann (Ardeletta), 2 grandsons: Adrian Greene (Medina) and Nicholas Swann, 2 great granddaughters: Ariyanna Greene and Leilani Greene, 4 brothers: Hulen McCoy Pulley (Donna), James Herald Pulley (Louise), Carl Ray Pulley (Helen), Roy Chester Pulley (Barbara), 2 brothers-in-law: Horace Swan (Mary) and Russell Swann, a sister-in-law, Florence Chandler, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends.
It is the desire of the Swann family that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
