Georgios Dikeou Obituary

Visit the Horan & McConaty Funeral Service & Cremation - South Denver website to view the full obituary.

Georgios Demetrios Dikeou passed away on February 26, 2026 surrounded by his loved ones, in the Hilltop home his parents purchased in 1943. Born on 9/2/1938, he was the oldest son of James D. Dikeou (a Greek immigrant) and Minnie Girk Dikeou (a German immigrant).

In his youth, George attended Denver Public Schools and was a proud East High School graduate. He continued his education at Menlo Junior College, in Menlo Park, California before transferring to Colorado College where he obtained his BA in Economics in 1960. He then attended the University of Edinburgh School of Law in Edinburgh Scotland where he studied international law and British constitutional law. After returning to the states, he graduated from Stanford University School of Law in 1964.

As a young man, George held many different jobs, including parking cars at the age of 13, driving a tour bus up Mount Evans and delivering candy and tobacco for his father’s business. As an attorney George was in private practice, a partner in several prominent law firms and was the Vice Chancellor for Legal Affairs and Risk Management at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. He also taught Health Law and Ethics for the University of Colorado beginning in 1972. He joined COPIC Companies in 1984 as Legal Counsel, served on COPIC Boards and retired as Executive Vice President in 2007. He continued to consult for many years. His other board memberships were many and varied, including Board of Visitors, Stanford University School of Law, Mountain Medical Affiliates, Civil Justice League, Colorado Physicians Health Program, Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center, Colorado Personalized Education for Physicians (CPEP), Colorado Judicial Institute and Common Good Colorado. George was a tireless advocate for physicians in Colorado and the nation. He played a key role in the passage of state legislative reforms addressing civil liability rules and programs aiding in the communication between patients and doctors.

He received many, many awards and accolades during his professional career including the Mack Easton Distinguished Service Award from the University of Colorado. Additionally, in 2012, he was the recipient of the inaugural George D. Dikeou Award, from the Colorado Physician Education Program.

In the words of a beloved colleague, “George was a man of rare depth and brilliance, an intellectual in the truest sense. He approached life with curiosity, rigor and a hunger for understanding. Yet beyond his sharp mind was a profoundly philosophical spirit - one who reflected deeply, questioned meaningfully and inspired others to think more expansively about the world and their place in it.”

George was a mentor to many, often to be found in his special booth at Elway’s Cherry Creek, sharing his knowledge and wisdom.

He was a gifted storyteller often recounting stories of early Denver passed down from his Father. He was also a talented prevaricator, convincing his daughters that spaghetti grew on trees in Italy and that he controlled the traffic lights and the songs played on the radio.

George loved traveling. He always knew the very best restaurants and the best local wines. He and his wife Yonnie (married 6/18/1977) travelled the world visiting Africa, Israel, Jordon, Czech Republic, Austria, France, Germany, England, Greece, Portugal and more. They loved the Island of St. John and vacationed there often.

Most of all, George loved his family, bragging about their accomplishments to whomever would listen. He was a proud Girl Dad, Papou and Great-Papou. He never missed a recital, game, play or anything else that his grandchildren were involved in and he was always the most vocal cheerleader.

George was predeceased by his parents, his brother John D. Dikeou and an infant daughter, Kelly Susan Dikeou. He is sorely missed by his loving wife, Yonnie, his treasured daughters Erica (Nick) Dikeou Marusich, Carissa D. Dikeou, Damara (Leonardo Zuniga) Dikeou, 7 beloved grandchildren and 3 beautiful great-grandchildren.

A celebration of Life will be held at Lakewood Country Club, 6800 W 10th Ave, Lakewood, CO at 2:00pm on April 11th, 2026. The family looks forward to hearing your memories of George.

In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Eben Ezer Lutheran Care Center, 122 Hospital RD, Brush, CO 80723, the ACLU or a charity of your choice.
