Gerald Crawmer Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Townley & Wheeler Funeral Home on Feb. 2, 2025.
Dateline: Clifton Park, NY
Gerald R. "Jerry" Crawmer, 87, of Clifton Park, NY, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 31, 2025, at Samaritan Hospital surrounded by the love of his family. Born on November 12, 1937, in Columbus, OH, Jerry was the son of the late Russel and Eloise Crawmer.
After graduating from Ohio State University with both a bachelor's and master's degree in Welding Engineering, Jerry proudly served as a Lieutenant of Artillery in the United States Army. He was stationed in Nuremberg, Germany, and honorably discharged in 1963.
In 1965, Jerry joined General Electric's Materials and Processes Laboratory in Schenectady, NY. He spent the next 37 years in a variety of engineering, management, and technical leadership roles, primarily in large and medium steam turbines, corporate consulting services, and power systems engineering, retiring in 2002. He was a licensed Professional Engineer in New York State and a life member of the American Welding Society, where he served as District Director from 1996 to 2002. Jerry was also active in GE's Elfun (later GE Volunteers) society.
Throughout his life, Jerry was deeply involved in his faith and community. He was a long-time member of Union Presbyterian Church in Schenectady, where he served as a deacon and elder. Later, he became a member of Christ Community Reformed Church in Clifton Park, where he also served as an elder and founded a Men's Group.
Jerry had many passions, including boating with his wife, Carolyn, on Lake George. He also loved traveling with her in their travel trailer, visiting friends along the way. An aviation enthusiast, Jerry enjoyed flying both real and model airplanes, as well as participating in ham radio, target shooting, and racing model sailboats.
Jerry is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Carolyn (Smith) Crawmer; his daughter, Cheryl Crawmer of Pickerington, OH; his son, David Crawmer of Scotia, NY; and two grandsons, Jacob and Andrew Crawmer.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, February 8, 2025 at 11:00am at Christ Community Reformed Church, 1010 Route 146, Clifton Park, NY. A luncheon will follow in the church's hearth room.
Interment with military honors will be held privately at Gerald B.H. Solomon Saratoga National Cemetery in Schuylerville, NY.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Welding Society Foundation, 8669 NW 36 Street, #130, Miami, FL 33166, to support welding-related scholarships, or to Christ Community Reformed Church. Jerry Crawmer was one of several of my heroes in the Welding Dept. in Bldg. 55 (I think it was 55) in Schenectady.
You could not find a nicer guy, more of a gentleman, than Jerry.
Such deep experience with welding and PWHT of ferritic alloy steels and castings.
At the annual AWS welding shows I would meet up with Jerry: he was always at the Wed. AM prayer breakfasts, and when possible, we would go for a steak dinner sometimes. I never knew he was in the army, he never mentioned it. He not an egoist, he was quiet.
So he retired in 2002, that makes sense. I didn't know that but around that time I recall he wasn't around anymore. That old guard from the welding dept. in GE Schenectady were all in this age group, they all disappeared during that period. I was lucky to know them.
Crawmer family: your Jerry was a fine man, a fine mentor, a smart, hardworking welding engineer, a true professional, an inspiration. Be forever very proud of him. GE was lucky to have him.
RIP Jerry, you did well.

Mrs. Crawmer- It was a true pleasure working with your husband, Jerry for the past 10 years- assisting him and servicing his needs. To think that I only knew part of the great man. I too try to emulate what God has asked us to be and do. Had I known I would have attended the celebration of life mass. Again, I say please accept my sincere condolences. If you have any intermediate questions please call me again, as you have my number. Meantime I will continue to pray for him and the entire family of yours. God bless,
Tony Skrabalak
