Gerald Huser Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Canale Funeral Directors - Memphis on Jan. 14, 2026.
Gerald "Gerry" Thomas Huser, 73, passed away on January 11, 2026, in Tuscumbia, Alabama. Born on August 28, 1952, in Indianapolis, Indiana, Gerry fulfilled his dream of being a pilot with abundant travel and adventure, while honoring the importance of family, friends, church, and service to his country.

Gerry was the beloved son of Jeanne Ann Huser, who survives him at age 96. He was preceded in death by his father, James R. Huser; his wife of 36 years and the mother of his three children, Julia (Julie) Ann Huser; and his wife, Shelley Segerson Legge Huser, with whom he shared six years.

He is lovingly remembered by his nine siblings (Mary, Jim, John, Maureen, Jean, Joe, Terry, Marilyn, and Chris) with whom he remained close throughout his life. Gerry's legacy continues through his three children: Andrew (Anna), Dan (Liz), and Kate; as well as his three stepchildren: Adam (Mary), Alan (Kristin), and Amanda. His grandchildren (Scott, James, Russell, Violet, Blake, Ella, Nathan, Natalie, Jackson, and Parker) were a source of great pride and joy.

Gerry graduated from high school at the Latin School of Indianapolis, where he considered the Catholic priesthood. He quickly changed his mind when he met Julie, his high school sweetheart, who became his wife a few years later. Determined to become a pilot, Gerry attended and graduated from Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

After college, Gerry joined the United States Coast Guard, which took him and Julie to Sacramento (CA), Corpus Christi (TX), Mobile (AL), and Miami (FL). These adventurous years as a pilot left him with many stories to tell and instilled in him the discipline and purpose that influenced every aspect of his life.

In 1984, Gerry began a distinguished 30-plus year career as a pilot with FedEx, where he flew around the world for many years as a Captain with skill and dedication. Flying wasn't just a job for Gerry, it was a passion… so much so that an airplane was always under construction in the garage. His many stories were about flying, the books he read were almost always about flying, and his kids often attended air shows with their dad.

In his retirement, Gerry found peace at the lake. He often said with a smile: "A bad day at the lake is still a good day." Gerry was never one to sit around and relax. He worked tirelessly on his many projects, as well as selflessly helping friends and neighbors. If someone didn't have what they needed for the task, Gerry always had the right tool for the job and was eager to help.

Whether it was chatting about his children and grandchildren, sharing tips on how to fix something, or regaling folks with his incredible life stories, Gerry never met a stranger. A gregarious storyteller with an easy charm and warm presence, he brought people together through humor and heart.

His faith was central to who he was. It guided him through life's joys and challenges alike. Those who loved Gerry take comfort knowing that he is now at eternal rest in Heaven, a place he believed in deeply.

Gerry leaves behind an enduring example of how to live fully with courage in service, passion for one's calling, love for family, laughter among friends, with faith always at the center. May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.

Celebration of Life services will be held on Tuesday, January 20th, 2026, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help at 8151 Poplar Avenue, Germantown, TN. Visitation will be at 10am and the Funeral Mass will be at 11am. A light luncheon will be served after in the Parish Hall. The family will hold a private burial at West Tennessee Veterans State Cemetery at a later date.
