Gerald Leydecker Obituary

Visit the Garden of Memories Funeral Home & Cemetery - Metairie website to view the full obituary.
Gerald "Jerry" J. Leydecker passed away peacefully on January 29, 2026. Jerry is preceded in death by his parents, John Leydecker and Ruby Day; his siblings, John "Buddy" Leydecker, Anna Leydecker Heinsz, Shirley Leydecker Seitz, Lorraine Leydecker Autin, and Cynthia Leydecker; and his son, Brian D. Leydecker.

Jerry is survived by his devoted partner of over 40 years, Joann Cuccio; his children, James Leydecker (Ginny), Craig Leydecker, and Dana Leydecker Camenzuli (Robert), and his beloved grandchildren, Marcus Leydecker (Maddie), Josiah Leydecker, Juliette Camenzuli, Veronica Camenzuli; his loyal dog Freckles; and his loving brother, Raymond Leydecker.

Jerry was born and raised in the New Orleans Carrollton neighborhood and graduated from Fortier High School. Soon after, he joined the Navy where he was deployed to the Pacific as an expert in Morse code. After serving his country he became a fireman, a taxi driver for United Cab, and an insurance adjuster for The Hartford Insurance Company. While adjusting claims, he realized he had an ambition to be an attorney. He tenaciously worked multiple jobs and drove to LSU for class to pursue his dream of becoming an attorney. LSUNO soon opened, allowing him to graduate in the first class of what is now UNO. He then graduated from Loyola Law School. He practiced law in New Orleans for over 60 years and made the path for his sons to continue his legacy. He loved practicing law. He was an accomplished litigator who gave his all to everyone he represented.

Jerry's personality was larger than life. He was proud of his nickname "Loophole Leydecker," which he earned from his zealous representation of his clients. His sharp mind and deep knowledge enabled him to find resourceful solutions. For years, you could find him holding court at restaurant bars throughout the city. He had strong opinions and a strong personality. He enjoyed a good debate, and he was convinced he had won every one of them. Jerry was generous with his resources and his knowledge.

He loved his family, his partner, and his friends. He traveled all over the globe with his partner Joann for baseball trips, Vegas and visiting historical sites throughout the world. He enjoyed sharing his travel stories with his grandchildren and instilling in them the desire to explore the world. He also enjoyed running, and he completed multiple marathons in his free time. He lived a full life and was very loved by his family.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial services on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at the Garden of Memories Funeral Home and Cemetery at 4900 Airline Drive, Metairie, LA, 70001. Visitation will begin at 9:00 am, with a Mass following at 11:00 am. Burial will take place after Mass in Garden of Memories Cemetery.
