Gerald Arne “Jerry” Mattson, age 89, of Aurora, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, August 21, 2025, surrounded by family, after a short illness.

Jerry was born on May 26, 1936, in Palo, Minnesota, to Arne and Hilja (Paaso) Mattson. He grew up in Duluth, but during high school, his family moved back to Aurora, and he graduated from Aurora Hoyt Lakes High School in 1955, where he excelled in sports, especially football. Following graduation, Jerry—affectionately known as “Murphy” by his coworkers—began a long and dedicated career with Minnesota Power as a control room operator at the Syl Laskin Power Plant, retiring in 1994 after more than 40 years of service.

On December 7, 1963, Jerry married Betty Jane Brown in Duluth, Minnesota. Together they built a loving family and shared 62 wonderful years filled with joy, laughter, and devotion.

Jerry was a lifelong sports enthusiast, with a particular love for football. On his rare weekends off, he also enjoyed attending stock car races. Known in the neighborhood for his mowing and snow blowing skills, he happily cleared sidewalks and driveways up and down the block. Above all, Jerry’s greatest joy was his family. He treasured watching his children and grandchildren grow, taking immense pride in attending their sporting events. Whether cheering from the sidelines or celebrating from afar, he was always their most devoted supporter. His steady presence, quiet pride, and encouraging smile meant the world to those he loved.

Jerry will be remembered for his kind heart, quiet resolve, and the joy he brought to every gathering (especially the annual gathering with extended family at the Port Wing Fish Boil). His legacy of love, old country music, dedication, and generosity will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Arne Mattson and Hilja Johnson; step-parents, Lecy Mattson and Willie Johnson; his brother, William “Bill” Mattson; and his grandson, Ryan Mattson.

Jerry is survived by his wife, Betty; his children: Marlon (Cindy) Mattson of Duluth, MN, Dean (Lia) Mattson of Las Cruces, NM, Roger (Julie) Mattson of Bremerton, WA, Lori (Joe) Larson of Waconia, MN, and James Mattson of Eagan, MN; his grandchildren: Salena (Jon) Tomlin, Chris Mattson, Melissa Rowe, Derek Mattson, Kyle Mattson, Patrick Mattson, Sam Larson, Ben Mattson, and Kaan Mattson; his great-grandchildren: Willow Mattson, Tristan Tomlin, Xayden Mattson, Colton Tomlin, Austin Rowe, Eli Rowe, Oakley Tomlin, Evan Rowe, and Gavin McDaniel; his nephew, Mark (Domonie) Mattson of Rockwall, TX; their children: Lyyli, Cody, and Danielle; and many extended family members and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date, with interment at Rauha Cemetery in Palo.
