Gerald Costa Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Phillips Funeral Home - Corning on Jan. 27, 2026.
Gerald T. "Gerry" Costa, age 79, passed away peacefully on January 26, 2026, at Guthrie Corning Hospital in Corning, New York, with his loving wife and best friend, Patricia "Trish" Costa, by his side. He was born on March 12, 1946, in Corning, NY, the son of the late Anthony P. and Winifred J. (Williams) Costa.

Gerry was a graduate of Corning East High School, Class of 1964. He went on to attend SUNY Morrisville, where he earned his Associate's Degree. Following his education, he was drafted into the United States Army and served honorably during the Vietnam War from 1966 to 1968, attaining the rank of Sergeant. During his military service, Gerry received numerous medals, including two Purple Hearts.

After returning home, Gerry began a long and dedicated career as a computer technician with Lucent Technologies in Corning, NY. He retired in 2001 after more than 30 years of service. On July 19, 2003, he married Patricia Hoose, with whom he shared a life filled with love, laughter, and companionship.

Gerry was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), where he held numerous leadership roles, including Junior Vice Commander through Commander, serving the organization with pride and distinction for many years. He was also a proud member of the Campbell American Legion and the Corning Moose Lodge.

An outstanding baseball player in his younger years, Gerry and his two brothers were known as an unstoppable trio, playing together in high school. Gerry continued his baseball career in college. He had a deep love for dogs and children, cherished time spent at the beach, and enjoyed traveling. Gerry and Trish took yearly trips to Jamaica, where they renewed their wedding vows in 2010. He was an avid and loyal fan of the Dallas Cowboys.

Gerry will be remembered for his easygoing nature, his infectious laughter, his uniquely special giggle, and his striking blue eyes that lit up every room he entered. He laughed easily, loved deeply, and left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Gerry is survived by his loving wife, Trish Costa of Corning, NY; sons: Shane (Natalie) Costa of Christiansburg, VA, Todd (Kelly) Costa of Campbell, NY; several grandchildren and great grandchildren; sister, Karen Gowen of Montrose, CO; brothers: Gordon Costa of Phoenix, AZ, Philip Costa of Kings Mountain, NC; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family members.

In addition to his parents, Gerry was predeceased by his brothers: Keith and Peter Costa; brother-in-law, Chuck Gowen and nephew, Kevin.

Per Gerry's wishes, there will be no services. Gerry will be entombed in Woodlawn National Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Phillips Funeral Home, 17 W. Pulteney St., Corning has been entrusted with Gerry's care.

Gerry's family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Brittany and the Corning ICU and Jason is Corning East Wing for their kindness and exceptional care. And special appreciation to close friend Dennis Bailey for his loving help and support.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Gerry's name may be sent a veteran service agency of your choice or to your local animal shelter.

May Gerry's memory bring comfort to all who knew him and may his legacy live on through those whose lives he touched.
