AUGUSTA, MAINE

Gertrude L. Sleeper, age 86, died Tuesday, January 20, 2026 at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick following a long illness. She was born in Lewiston, ME on May 14, 1939, a daughter of the late Charles and Cedulie (Jean) Denis.

Mrs. Sleeper was a homemaker for most of her life and had worked for several years at Bates Mfg., Edwards Division. She was a lover of music, and had happy memories of singing in the glee club in high school. Her extensive music collection ranged from Hank Williams to heavy metal. Shopping for CDs and albums was her favorite past time. People in the Augusta community befriended her, and teased about her being a professional shopper. She was also very passionate about animal welfare, and donated to several charities to help animals. She was a strong personality with an unbeatable spirit. Her best friend was a Maine coon cat named Prince, who was her friendly companion for 14 years.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, Harold L. Sleeper; her brothers: Gerard and Camile Denis; a grandson, Joshua A. Sleeper; and a great granddaughter, Allison Mae Rogers.

Mrs. Sleeper is survived by her daughter Carol A. Sleeper of Boothbay Harbor. She is also survived by her daughter Sandra Martineau, and her husband Dennis of Lewiston; her sister, Ludgarde Fortin of Auburn; a granddaughter, Jessica Rogers and her husband Matthew of Punta Gorda, FL; two great grandchildren: Michael and Cameron Rogers as well as several nieces, nephews and cousins.

There will be no public visiting hours. A graveside service will be held in the spring at Maine Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Civic Center Drive, Augusta.

The family requests that donations in Gertrude's memory be made to: Kennebec Valley Humane Society, 168 Leighton Rd., Augusta, ME, 04330.
