Gilbert Crawford Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by DW Brooks Funeral Home on Sep. 18, 2024.
MSgt. Gilbert Arthur Crawford, USAF (Ret.), affectionately known as Gib, passed away on February 18, 2024, in San Antonio, TX, after a period of failing health. Born in Independence, Missouri, on September 7, 1937, Gib's warmth, humor, and intelligence illuminated the lives of those around him throughout his 86 years. Gib's journey began in the heartland of America, where his robust spirit and dedication to service first took root. After serving in the United States Army as a land surveyor in Germany, Gib returned to civilian life, where he met and married Margaret Kathleen (Morris) Spring, with whom he had three children. His early career saw him working diligently at the Chevrolet Plant, both in Missouri and later in California. However, Gib's commitment to his country beckoned once more, leading him to enlist in the United States Navy in 1963. During the Vietnam War, he distinguished himself through his service and received several awards in recognition of his valor and dedication. In 1967, Gib transitioned to the United States Air Force, where he continued to serve with distinction until his retirement in 1983 as a Master Sergeant. His military career was marked by a steadfast commitment to excellence and the profound respect of his peers and subordinates alike. After his illustrious military career, Gib began a second career in the United States Postal Service in San Antonio, Texas. There, he became a familiar and friendly face to the many people on his route, retiring after 20 years of dedicated service. Gib's work ethic was unparalleled, but it was his warmth and intelligence that left a lasting impression on everyone he met. Beyond his professional achievements, Gib was a man of many passions. He was an ardent supporter of the Kansas City Chiefs, and his enthusiasm for the game often found him cheering on the local Judson football team with equal fervor. Gib also had a love for cars, which was only matched by his enjoyment of golfing and fishing-pastimes that allowed him to revel in the beauty of nature and the company of good friends. Gib's legacy of joy and friendship is carried on by his family: his wife Pok Sun; his sons Raymond Arthur (Debbie) Crawford of San Antonio and Robert Andrew of Norfolk, VA; his daughter Teresa (Cheryl) Crawford of Grand Rapids, MI; his brothers Edward (Jackie) Crawford of Florida, and Douglas (Carol) Crawford of Missouri. His grandchildren Angela, Danny, Calista, Makena, and Kierstyn, along with his nephews Mark and Kyle Crawford, and the extended Davison family, will fondly remember his humor and kindness. Gib was also a cherished figure to his great-grandchildren and many great-nieces and nephews. Preceding Gib in death were his second wife, Kumi Crawford; his parents, Harry A. Crawford and Helen (Johnson) Davison; his sisters Peggy Davison, and Jerry (Davison) Stark; his brother Doyle Davison; and his niece Natasha Crawford and nephew Kelly Crawford.
Gib's life was a testament to the enduring power of love, laughter, and intellect. Those who knew him will remember his friendly demeanor, his effortless wit, and the intelligent conversations that could span from the intricacies of a well-played football game to the finer points of military history. As we bid farewell to MSgt. Gilbert Arthur Crawford, we do so with gratitude for the time we shared with him and the memories that will continue to inspire us. His influence will remain a guiding force, much like the North Star he often gazed upon during his nights at sea. Gib's story is one of honor, joy, and a life well-lived-a narrative that will be recounted with smiles and reverence for generations to come.
