January 5, 1929-July 26, 2025
Gilbert J. Gilchrist, Sr, 96, of Rolling Prairie, Indiana, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2025 at Northwest Health-La Porte, IN.
He was born January 5, 1929 in Crosby, Missouri, the son of Clifford E Gilchrist and Ethel (Gnuschke) Gilchrist.
A lifelong resident of the area, Gilbert graduated from Rolling Prairie High School, class of 1947, where he played baseball and basketball. On November 8, 1948, in Newport, Kentucky, he married Margery Jean Jones and they were inseparable until her death in 2004. Gilbert worked in construction for Bill Harris, who taught him everything he knew, and when Bill died, Gilbert started his own business, along with Bill Halter, called Rolling Builders. Over the years, Gil, as he was affectionately known, took many family trips and especially enjoyed weekends at the cottage in Michigan. He loved fishing and after retirement enjoyed woodworking at home, making bookcases and wind spinners for the family. Gilbert was a quiet man who worked hard and took great care of his family and will be sadly missed by those who had the honor to know him.
Gil is survived by his sons, Dale (Elizabeth Reinfurth) Gilchrist of Rolling Prairie, IN, Cliffton C. (Melissa) Gilchrist of La Porte, IN; daughter, Ann (Bill Pegg) Gilchrist of La Porte, IN; sister, Norma Bardusk of Oak Forest, IL; daughter-in-law, Lory Gilchrist of Rolling Prairie, IN; six grandchildren, Sheryl (Jason) Warren, Jody (Jack) Strope, Dale (Stacey) Gilchrist Jr., Andrew (Theresa) Gilchrist, Abby (Kendel) Copping Gilchrist, Keely Gilchrist; 10 great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild, and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
