Gilbert Acy Townsend, age 80, a lifelong resident of DeWitt, VA, passed away Saturday, May 11, 2024. He was preceded in death by his parents, Dorothy and Acy Townsend.
Gilbert was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a beloved member of the DeWitt-Rocky Run community. He was a lifelong member of Rocky Run United Methodist Church, a member of Dinwiddie Lodge No. 136 A.F. & A.M. and DeWitt-Rocky Run Ruritan Club, and a founding member of Rocky Run Hunt Club. Gilbert was a baseball enthusiast all of his life, playing and coaching for many years. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service after 27 years as a rural letter carrier.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Glenice Neville Townsend; a daughter, Stacy Townsend Lewis (Glenn); a son, William Glen Townsend; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Lewis Hennessey (Dante), Ethan Garrett Townsend; a brother, Charles Wayne Townsend; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, including a devoted nephew, Chuck Townsend. Gilbert was proud to be “Pa” to so many youth in his community.
A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 18, 2024 at Rocky Run United Methodist Church. Interment and Masonic Rites will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rocky Run UMC Cemetery Fund, 14925 Glebe Road, DeWitt, VA 23840 or Rocky Run Athletic Association, 11510 Snowy Ridge Court, Dinwiddie, VA 23841.
