Gladys Lynette Clay-Butts was born on February 26, 1956, in St. Paul, Minnesota where the Clay Family lived until 1961. By 1963, the family settled in Chicago, Illinois where she would go to Luther Norm High School. She attended Wiley College in Marshall, Texas from 1974-1978 and was initiated into the Phi Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. in 1975. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Wiley in 1978 before getting her Masters in Social Work from Atlanta University in 1980.
In 1979, Gladys started her fulfilling career at Asbury Harris Epworth Towers, a retirement community of Wesley Woods, as the Resident Services Coordinator and was promoted to Administrator in 1984. However, she was not all work and no play. She was active in the fitness community at Mack's Fitness Center and an avid tennis player, participating in organized tennis with the Atlanta Lawn and Tennis Association (ALTA). She not only played on the court but was also a coordinator and VP of the Sunday Women's League. She was a member of the Jewels and Partners Ministry for over 20 years. She was currently serving as co-chair. As an active member of Ben Hill United Methodist Church, she served as Ben Hill Church Council secretary, Ben Hill Christian Academy Advisory Board chair, SPRC chair, Ben Hill Leadership Team, Women Assemble, and Sanctuary Choir. She was willing to help wherever there was a need.
Gladys transitioned peacefully on August 25, 2022 at Emory Healthcare of Atlanta.
Gladys was survived by her son Robert Lee Butts, her sister Lara Clay, and her sister-in-law Alice Clay of Atlanta, Georgia, as well as her brother Willie B. Clay, Jr. (Aldora) of Chicago, Illinois. Her nieces and nephews include Stefanie Clay-Smith (Marcellus Smith, IV) of Chicago, Holly Clay of Atlanta, Willie Clay III (Ali) of Fidley, Minnesota, Christopher Clay (Tamicca) of Columbus, Ohio, and Caprice Clay, Cass Walker, Anthony Clay, and April Clay all of Atlanta. She also had great nieces in nephews including Camilla Jane Clay of Fidlay, Isaac Clay of Chicago and Isaiah Clay of Atlanta and a host of other relatives and friends.
She is preceded in death by her father, Dr. Willie B. Clay and her mother Ruth Clay, her sister Margo Clay, her brother Jonathon Clay and her nephew Joseph Clay.

As a former grade school classmate at Midwestern Christian Academy, may God`s blessing and comfort be with the family, knowing she is with the Lord.

Today would have been Ms. Butts' 43rd work anniversary. She will be missed but I am thankful for the time spent with her.
