Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina
Mrs. Gladys Richardson Sledge, 69, of Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, and daughter of the late Daniel Allen Richardson and Martha Peterson Richardson was born on January 02,1956 in Bronx, New York. She departed this earthly life on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at the Lodge of Rocky Mount in Dortches, North Carolina.
Gladys obtained her education through the public school system in Bronx New York. She later moved to North Carolina as a young adult and met her husband of 48 years, Quintin Sledge. To this union, two children were born, Jackie and LaToya, baby sisters to Tuqwan and Shalita.
Gladys worked as a front desk manager at Farm Fresh for many years, as cashier at Corner Cupboard (where Walgreens now sits) and the Green Store. She retired from Second Street Lunch after working for 15 years as a cook and waitress.
In her spare time, Gladys was a fluent reader and loved reading her Bible, as well as, other books. She also enjoyed doing word search and crossword puzzles, and coloring. Gladys was the life of the party and would always be one of the first people on the dance floor, with her husband being the second! Her favorite song was "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke. Gladys loved helping her children and grandchildren in any way she could assist, and she loved bragging and telling everybody how great her son-in- laws, Waddell and Tom were!
She took great pride in feeding her family Sunday and holiday meals and making sure that Jackie had her sweet potato pies for the holidays, and Waddell had some tender cooked pig feet. Before she fell ill, she volunteered to assist Jackie in hospitality duties for the Lighthouse of Deliverance church family and friends by sending "thinking of you", "get well soon", and sympathy cards out when needed, to Lighthouse family and friends; if you received a card addressed from the church with a beautiful handwriting, surprise, Gladys sent it!
She was predeceased by her parents: Daniel and Martha; her brother: Daniel (Johnny) Richardson, Jr.; her grandson: Devante Shoulders; her nephew: Matthew Richardson; and her sister-in-law: Florence Ann Silver.
Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Quintin Sledge of the home; her children: Tuqwan Richardson of Roanoke Rapids, NC, Shalita Ward of Goldsboro NC, Jacquelyn Moore (Waddell) of Roanoke Rapids, NC, and Latoya Shoulders (Thomas) of Margarettsville, NC; thirteen grandchildren: Denzel, Raekwon, Donjay (Chey), Nadera, Destiny, Rodney, Jakayla, Trinity, Alexus, Tevon, Xavier, and Charquaeliah; three adopted grandchildren: Corey, Dashawn, and Jakiah; seven great-grandchildren: Josiah, Jaleeya, Ja'Mia, Aubrielle, Audriana, Royalty, Nolan, and DaSani; one brother-in-law: Keith Sledge of Clarksville, TN; four sisters-in- law: Joyce Richardson of Garysburg, NC, Regina Johnson (Bogg) of Hillside, NJ, Shelia Boyd (Joseph) of Garysburg, NC, and Deborah Sledge of Clarksville, TN; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends.
