Gladys M (Godwin) Spell passed away in hospice on Monday, February 6th, 2023 in Houston, Texas after a very brief illness. She was born to Eugene and Katie Godwin on August 26, 1926. She was one of 7 siblings and the last surviving one. Gladys graduated Salutatorian in her class and then became an Operator with Western Union. It was during this time that she met the love of her life Lawrence L Spell and they married on 6/8/1947. In 1954 they became the proud parents of a baby boy whom they named Rodney Glenn Spell. She spent most of her married life working toward providing her husband and son a comfortable home. She enjoyed working as a substitute in the office at Spring Branch ISD. At 96 years she still remained very active and was able to remain independent in her home up to the time of her death.
Gladys loved her family dearly and enjoyed any time she could spend with them. She was an active member for many years at Longpoint Baptist Church. She was baptized at Longpoint Baptist Church in 1970 alongside her son Rodney. She loved attending church and made many friends there. She also enjoyed being in a Pinochle and Bunko gaming group and loved attending the YMCA for bingo and other senior activities in her later years. She also was an avid Astro's fan and enjoyed going to the games and collecting the give away merchandise.
Gladys is preceded in death by her husband Lawrence L Spell and step grandson Joel Robinson. She leaves behind her son, Rodney Spell and his wife Robyn; three grandchildren Cassidy Spell, Graham Spell and his wife Sarah, and Bethany Spell as well as three step-grandchildren, Zachary Robinson and his wife Justine, Keslie Dodd and her husband Jacob, Colton Robinson and his wife Payton. Additionally she leaves behind 8 great grandchildren as well as a host of other loving extended family members and friends. Gladys was dearly loved and although 96 plus years of age, we were unprepared for her loss. Like everyone else we thought she would be with us forever. She is and will be greatly missed.
A short visitation will be held from 10-11am on Thursday, February 16th, 2023 with funeral services immediately after. Services will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home Chapel, 1101 Antoine, Houston, TX. Interment will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX.
Pallbearers for the service are Cassidy Spell, Graham Spell, Zachary Robinson, Jacob Dodd, Caleb Knight, Joe Bazan, Steven Dudenhoeffer and Lane Robinson. Honorable mention pallbearers are Colton Robinson and Joseph Spell, and Jaxon Spell.
