Glenn Toivo Hargitt, 88, passed away on Saturday, August, 30, 2025 at his home. Glenn was born on January 14, 1937, in San Francisco, California to Glenn L Hargitt and Aileen M (Knutinen) Hargitt. During his early years, the family moved frequently, living in California, Montana, and Washington State. Glenn graduated from Walla Walla High School in Walla Walla, Washington, in 1955.

Following high school, Glenn enlisted in the United States Air Force and was stationed at Hamilton Air Force Base just outside San Francisco. It was there he met his future wife, Maryann Moomaw of Bloomfield, Indiana. They were married on December 17, 1961, at Bloomfield United Methodist Church. At the time, Glenn was stationed in Waco, Texas, where they welcomed their son, John Hargitt, followed by their daughter, Susan Hargitt. After completing his active-duty service, the family moved to Ellettsville, Indiana, in December 1965. In 1969, they welcomed their second daughter, Julie (Hargitt) Pyle.

Glenn was deeply involved in his community. He was active in the Civil Air Patrol, DeMolay, and the Masonic Lodge, where he achieved the rank of 32nd-degree Mason. A proud Eagle Scout himself, Glenn dedicated many years to Boy Scout Troop 119 in Ellettsville, serving in numerous leadership roles and helping the troop become one of the highest Eagle Scout-producing troops in Indiana. He was also a devoted member of the Ellettsville United Methodist Church, serving in various capacities over the years.

Glenn served our nation for 36 years-10 years on active duty in the U.S. Air Force, where he attained the rank of Staff Sergeant, followed by 26 years in the Indiana Army National Guard. He rose through the ranks from Staff Sergeant to Chief Warrant Officer 4 before retiring.

After earning his degree from Indiana University in 1966, Glenn joined General Electric in Bloomington, Indiana, where he worked as a Quality Control Engineer for the side-by-side refrigerator production line. Following his retirement from GE, he continued his work in quality control as a private contractor for GE and several other companies.

Glenn is survived by his son, LTC (Ret.) John Hargitt (Mihui); daughter Susan Hargitt; daughter Julie Pyle (Matt); and his sister Jeanie Hargitt. He is also survived by his grandchildren: Tiffany Lee (Mark), RJ Rusch (Vanessa), Christopher Hargitt, Kimberly Rusch, Alexsander Hargitt (Christina), Jared Pyle, and Abagail Pyle; and great-grandchildren: Connor Lee, Gracelyn Pyle, Kayci Pyle, Christian Snell, and Austin Lee who was born just weeks before Glenn's passing. Glenn was immensely proud to be both a grandfather and great-grandfather.

Glenn was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years Maryanne Hargitt, his parents Glenn L and Aileen Hargitt, his in-laws John and Jetta Moomaw, his brother Jerry Hargitt, sister Drusilla Fisher and several cousins, aunts and uncles.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at 1:30 p.m. at Chandler Funeral Home in Ellettsville. A graveside service for Glenn will follow at 1:30 pm at Presbyterian Cemetery in Ellettsville, with Dr. Art Collins officiating and military honors provided by the Monroe County Honor Guard.
