Glenn was born on April 25, 1950, in Pender County, North Carolina, to Lewis Sanford and Mary Elizabeth (Guy) Smith. He grew up in Bladen County, North Carolina, and attended the little white country church his father helped build, Cypress Creek Baptist Church. Every chance he got, he farmed, helping on the family tobacco farm and working on neighboring blueberry and tobacco farms. He graduated from high school in Garland, North Carolina, and shortly after, he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force, serving during the Vietnam War Era. He married Janie Holloway in Abilene on January 27, 1973.
Glenn graduated from Cisco Junior College with associate's degrees in business management and welding. Glenn loved farming, ranching, hunting and fishing but, most of all, his family. His favorite job was the 17 years he spent with Eula ISD where he made many long-lasting friendships.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Janie Smith; son, Dale Smith of Abilene; daughter, Sara Montes and husband Michael of Abilene; two brothers, Allen Smith and wife Shirley of Rockingham, North Carolina, and Jimmy Smith and wife Phyllis of Garland, North Carolina; three sisters, Rosalie Melton of Rocky Mount, North Carolina, Shirley Pollard of Randleman, North Carolina and Judy Scott of Wenatchee, Washington; five grandchildren, Ashton Smith, Kaleb Devlin, Weston Montes, Caleb Montes, and River Montes; sisters-in-law, Carol Andersen of Abilene, Faye Smith of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Carol Smith of Rocky Mount, North Carolina; brother-in-law, Tony Quinn of Menlo Park, California and numerous nieces and nephews.
Glenn was preceded in death by his brothers, Robert, Ronald, and Joe Smith, and brothers-in-law, James Melton, Rex Pollard, Dick Scott, and Mike Andersen.
