Gloria Pearl Lorraine Carlson Gustilo, 85, of Eden Prairie, Minnesota, passed away peacefully into Eternal rest on August 26, in the year of our Lord 2023 at the family's second home in Manapla, Negros Occidental, Philippines. She was surrounded by the love and prayers of her devoted husband and five children, and received the final sacraments of the Catholic Church.
Gloria leaves behind her husband of 63 years, Ramon Gustilo, who loves her beyond measure. They exchanged first glances in a hospital chart room in 1958, she-a nurse in training, and he-an immigrant resident from the Philippines. They married on February 6th, 1960.
She also leaves behind five grown children and their spouses: Melissa and Steven Hanson; Nicholas and Tracy Gustilo; Lillian Gustilo and Roderick Hamar; Christopher and Rinna Gustilo; and Tara and Gregory Gustilo.
In addition, she leaves 15 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and in-laws whom she loved with all her heart: Jacob Gustilo and his children, Alexis and Dylan; Benjamin and Larkin Hanson, their daughters Cecilia, Ava and Everly; Gabrielle Gustilo and Jacob Solus; Nathan and Erica Gustilo; Samuel Hanson; Eli Gustilo; Sister Bernadette-Marie (nee Alexandra Hamar), F.L.M; Katherine Gustilo; Daniel Hamar; Noah Gustilo; Abbe Zachary Hamar; Keenan Ashby; Josef Hanson; Jordan Ashby; and Logan Ashby.
Born on February 10, 1938 in Chisago City, Minnesota, Gloria was the second daughter of Roy Gilbert and Lillian Evelyn Alida (Johnson) Carlson. She is survived by her three remaining siblings: Loretta Carlson; Shelley Dixon and brother Bruce Carlson, as well as, many cherished nieces, nephews, extended
family and friends.
Gloria was a generous and supportive wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Her eccentric and lavish personality created beautiful homes and great dinner parties. Listening was her special charism. She was a devout Catholic, an avid reader of all kinds, a deep thinker, part-time artist, world-traveler, prodigious coffee-drinker, staunch cigarette smoker, and aficionado of the sparkling and divine. She was a beautiful woman with great style.
Gloria believed the adage, "to much is given, much is expected," and personified this by her generous support spiritually, emotionally and financially to family, friends and community. She and Ramon personally sponsored dozens of family and community members in their education and she expertly practiced familial philanthropy. She volunteered weekly with pro-life organizations for decades.
She was a true wife and mother; the rock and heart of our family. To her husband, she was his best friend and North Star. For her children, she was their first and best cheerleader; Chris aptly put it, "Mom's favorite child was the one in front of her." While we will miss her terribly, we thank God for the last few days we all had together and trust in God's consolation until, God willing, we are together again.
The wake will be on Friday, September 22, at the family home, 6541 Beach Road, Eden Prairie from 4:00-7:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, September 23, at 10:00 AM at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 6820 St Patrick's Lane, Edina, MN. Burial will take place immediately thereafter, at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, 4403 Chicago Avenue, Minneapolis, Minnesota. A reception will be held at the family home beginning at 4:00 PM.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made per her request, to SHARING AND CARING HANDS, sharingandcaringhands.org (501(c)(3)). Or to: Ramon and Gloria Gustilo Foundation, Inc., which provides support for college education for local, talented Filipinos (email: [email protected]) (not US tax deductible).
