R Gloria (Gloria) Meyer was born in Sibley, Iowa, to Dr. Orin and Flossie (Bell) Parrott, on August 14, 1918. She was raised and educated in Sibley with her 2 siblings, Gertrude and Marne. She attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls where she met fellow student Cyril Meyer. They were engaged prior to World War 2 with Cy subsequently joining the US Army and serving in combat in Europe. To join her future husband in serving the Country, Gloria volunteered with the American Red Cross as a nurse, also serving in combat zones, including in the Philippines, where she served on hospital ships which were struck by the explosive-laden planes piloted by kamikaze pilots.
Soon after the end of the war, they were united in marriage on December 26, 1945 in Sibley, Iowa.
Subsequently, they both taught for one year in Onedia, Iowa. They then moved to Ovid, New York in 1947, where Gloria worked at the First National Bank of Ovid and Cy taught business at Ovid Central School. While in Ovid, Gloria and Cy lived across the street from her sister Gertrude (Polly) Jacoby, her husband Robert and Gloria's three nephews; Rob, Bill and Jim. Around 1960, Gloria and Cy moved to the Rochester, NY area, where Gloria taught high school English, becoming head of the English department, while Cy continued to teach business. They retired from the Greece School System in 1974.
Soon after retirement, Gloria and Cy made their home in Phoenix, Arizona, and 4 ½ years later, settled in Sun City, Arizona. There they enjoyed a very active life style: tennis, hiking, and square dancing. They traveled extensively, covering a great deal of the country in their RV, and enjoyed many international cruises. In 1999, they moved to Tequesta, Florida, where they lived near nephews Rob and Jim Jacoby and their families. Gloria and Cy moved back to Sibley in October of 2000. Cy passed away May 22, 2001.
Gloria then lived alone in Sibley for the next 17 years, close to her cousins Audrey (Attig) Schulte, Marilyn (Attig) Huisenga and their families. Gloria was very active in church activities and the Osceola County Historical Society. Prior to taking a serious fall, Gloria shoveled snow, drove herself to church and around town, and went on long walks, independently; even in the winter when she would walk in the Sibley High School gym during inclement weather.
In 2017, Gloria moved back to her Florida family, where she continued to go on family vacations and cruises, attending church weekly, with a family brunch each Sunday after services. She resided at Mangrove Bay Senior Living facility in Jupiter, Florida where she engaged in a very full schedule of activities and trips. She exercised daily, took walks on the river walk and was still using exercise machines and lifting one-pound weights in the Mangrove Bay fitness center up to her passing.
Gloria led a lifetime of travel and independence. Over her lifetime, Gloria traveled extensively, and went on 56 cruises, often taking family and friends. Her favorite travel destinations were Alaska and Israel.
She is survived by nieces Connie Mitchell and Carol Force; nephews Robert, William and James Jacoby; 6 grandnieces; 9 great-grandnieces and nephews; and first cousin Marilyn Huisenga.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cyril, her siblings Gertrude Jacoby and Marne Force, first cousins Audrey (Attig) Schulte, and Harold Richard Attig.
