Harlan Gregory "Greg" Fields, 66, of Greeneville, TN passed away on March 8, 2025. He was born on January 29, 1959 to Alexander Fields and Charlsie Hood-Fields in Kingsport, TN An alumnus of East Tennessee State University and Tusculum College, he worked as an adjunct professor in the Bluegrass program at ETSU, teaching old-time and bluegrass guitar. His love of music began at the young age of four years old when an uncle gifted him his first guitar; using music as a way to interact with the world due to his poor eyesight, his talent grew by playing music by ear. His joy for life and music made a deep impact on anyone who had the pleasure to meet him, and made him a standard name in many bluegrass, old-time, folk, and gospel circles of Eastern Tennessee. His love of his family leaves a hole in our hearts. He is survived by his wife, Mary Anne Ellenburg-Fields; his sister Jennifer Baker; several loving nieces and their children; his son Luke Alexander Fields, daughter-in-law Kayla Anne Fields, and their children Keely Alexis Fields, Kenzie Nichole Fields, and Harlan Arlo Fields; and his daughter Charlsie Katherine Fields and son-in-law Or Hammou. He is preceded in death by his parents Alexander Fields and Charlsie Ruth Hood-Fields and son Jeremiah Shane Fields. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 5-8pm at Jeffers Funeral Service downtown. On Wednesday at 3:20pm, friends and family are asked to meet at the funeral home for a procession to Harris Memorial Freewill Baptist Church in Camp Creek for a 4pm graveside service. Light snacks and sharing of fond memories will immediately follow in the fellowship hall.

Greg directed one of my early bluegrass bands at ETSU. I really appreciate him and I´m sorry to know he´s passed.

I couldn´t even say how many hours he spent with me outside of class playing guitar for me so I could work out breaks and nerves.
