Gregory D. Roonan, 75, of Murrells Inlet, formerly of Oceanport NJ, passed away on October 31, 2025. To know him is to know that his birthday was most appropriate, April 1st, April Fool's Day, 1950. Born in Kearny NJ, he was the son of Kenneth and Ellen Roonan as well as the beloved husband of 52 years to Beverly Kay Roonan.
He was a man of great education, (BA in History and Political Science from Methodist University, and Juris Doctorate from University of Bridgeport School of Law.), great professional success, (Managing partner of Graham, Miller, Neandross, Mullin, and Roonan Law firm), however his greatest success and fondest hobby was being a devoted husband, father, and grandfather to his wife, children, and grandchildren. Whether it be athletic contests or theatrical performances, he could often be seen, and heard, in the front rows of bleachers and theaters cheering and supporting his children in whatever endeavor they so choose. He was a master motivator and had a unique way of inspiring those he spoke with to be the very best they could, and if you didn't hear his words, he led by example. Above all else, he reveled in being the "life of the party." Whether it be singing, dancing, performing in costume, or holding court with his infectious personality and rolodex of stories, he made sure you always had a cold drink, full belly, and a lifetime of memories. Wherever he was, he made it the place to be. Adorned in his signature Hawaiian floral shirts, colorful hats, and lengthy cigars, he made sure that any event he was a part of, was one that couldn't be missed.
When the children were young, he was instrumental in developing the Oceanport Recreation Committee, as well as the Oceanport Adult Athletic Association. In high school, Greg was President of the Red Bank Catholic Booster Club.
He is predeceased by his parents, Kenneth and Ellen Roonan, and recently his daughter Amanda Afonso. He is survived by his wife Beverly Roonan of Murrells Inlet, son and daughter-in-law Gabriel and Melissa Roonan of Toms River NJ, son and daughter-in-law Gregory T. and Amy Roonan of Murrells Inlet, granddaughters Carly Afonso, Delaney Roonan, Lucy Roonan, and Isabella Roonan, and grandsons Christian Afonso-Roonan and Declan Roonan. Also survived by his brother Randall Roonan and wife Sheryll, nephews, Sheamus Roonan and Casey Roonan.
A Celebration of Greg's life will be held privately.
